True Leadership

Yesterday, I attended Alfonso Salazar’s general election kickoff, and I saw leadership in action.

Alfonso chooses community over himself. He made room for other candidates and shared the floor because he understands that leadership is not about getting the spotlight. It is about bringing people together and moving the whole community forward.

I have seen firsthand, on many occasions, Alfonso offer to help and then actually follow through. He does not just show up long enough to take a picture and leave. He stays, listens, asks questions, and helps where he can.

That is the difference between campaigning and leading.
True leadership means representing the whole community, Republicans, independents, Democrats, and everyone in between.

Thank you, Alfonso, for setting the example.

What does unity look like?

We have been through many hard-fought primaries across Hays County. We challenged one another, we disagreed, and we made our cases. But as we move toward November, we have a choice: carry those divisions forward or come together around the future we want for our community.

Johnny Flores and I competed in one of those primaries. We didn't always agree on how to get there, but we share an important belief: Hays County should be left better for the generations that follow us. As I pledged during the primary, I will support and stand behind our Democratic nominee. Johnny Flores earned that right and your vote.

We can disagree without becoming divided. We can compete without becoming enemies. We can demand accountability without abandoning unity. We can move forward for a better Hays County.

This is how we heal. This is how we unite. This is how we lead. This is how we leave Hays County better.

You never really know how a presentation is going until someone catches a picture like this. 😂

Judging by the look on Judge Ruben’s face, I apparently got at least one joke right last night. And if you look closely, Willie is cracking up too!

I have a tremendous amount of respect for both of these guys, which makes this picture even better.

We spend a lot of time talking about serious things, and rightfully so. But laughter is contagious, and sometimes you just have to enjoy the moment.

I have no idea what I said here…but apparently I thought I was pretty funny too. 😂

Proposed Hays County Health District Special Meeting

Monday, August 17, 2026, at 2PM

I have called a special meeting regarding a public vote for a proposed Health District in Hays County, with the goal of creating a district that will provide a minimum basic level healthcare for all residents of Hays County.

This special meeting’s intention is to have a concentrated discussion about the current state of healthcare in Hays County and the potential savings and value that a health district could bring to our county.

I initially planned to place this item on today’s agenda. However, so much of our bandwidth was taken up with the budget that I did not feel our citizens would have a fair opportunity to fully consider and engage with this very important issue.

Access to healthcare is dwindling, and yet it is so important. There are several different ways we can go about bringing a health district to life, and I have placed two potential routes on the agenda.

Your input is needed and I hope you will join me, and my fellow commissioners, in putting the healthcare interests of our friends, neighbors, and families first, and support one or both of these agenda items.

Ultimately, I want to make sure that Hays County voters have the opportunity to make their voices heard, and for you to be able to vote on this issue in November.
