Alonso Echeverria has been arrested in connection with a series of crimes committed throughout Kyle and Buda yesterday, including stealing a vehicle with a 5-month-old child inside and breaking into multiple Buda homes.
Around 6:00 p.m., Echeverria stole a vehicle from the 800 block of Kohlers Crossing in Kyle with the baby still inside. He drove it to an emergency room in Buda, where he abandoned both the vehicle and the child before taking off on foot. Our investigators used automated license plate reader (ALPR) technology to quickly identify and locate the vehicle, recovering the unharmed infant, who was reunited with the family.
Thankfully, a tip from a community member helped officers locate him near an apartment complex in the 1200 block of Cabela's Drive. While attempting to get away, he broke into two occupied apartment homes before being taken into custody without further incident with the assistance of the Buda Police Department and the Hays County Sheriff’s Office.
As the investigation continued, Echeverria was linked to an additional vehicle theft that occurred in Kyle earlier that afternoon.
He is being charged with abandoning or endangering a child, theft of property valued between $30,000 and $150,000, tampering with a government record, tampering with physical evidence, and evading arrest or detention with previous convictions, along with multiple theft-related offenses, criminal mischief, and public intoxication. The Buda Police Department is also charging him with criminal trespass of a habitation.
