π¨ BOATER SAFETY REMINDER π¨
With current freezing temperatures across the region, the Northwest Arctic Borough is reminding residents to use extreme caution when traveling by boat.
Our Search & Rescue team have seen an influx of stranded boaters throughout the region. As temperatures continue to drop, becoming stranded on the water can quickly become a dangerous situation.
If you choose to travel by boat, please take extra precautions:
*Travel prepared. Bring extra warm clothing, gear, fuel, food, and water in case your trip takes longer than expected.
π± Carry a reliable means of communication. Bring an inReach or other satellite communication device, or a cell phone capable of satellite texting where available.
*Let someone know your plans. Tell a family member or trusted person where you are going and when you expect to return.
π‘οΈ Check the weather and conditions before heading out. Freezing temperatures and changing conditions can make travel more hazardous than expected.
* Know your route and your equipment. Make sure your boat, motor, fuel, safety equipment, and communication devices are ready before departing.
Stay safe, look out for one another, and make sure someone knows where you are going before you head out.
