Designed in built in 1940 and put into service in 1941, the Union Pacific 4014 "Big Boy" was seen on US rails for only 14 years.
Until this year.
Rotarians Daniel Carbaugh and Glen Boise shared history of "Big Boy" and its celebrated coast-to-coast journey as part of the United States' 250th anniversary.
Conceived and built to handle the steep grades of the Rocky Mountains, the 4014 weighed in at 1.2 million pounds with a length of 133 feet.
Following its end of service in the 1950s, the "Big Boy" was put on display at the Los Angeles County Fairgrounds, where it sat for 51 years.
In 2019, Union Pacific Railroad Company authorized its refurbishment in 2019 with the intention of making a historic trek across the country.
Union Pacific, which operates primarily in the Western US, partnered with the East's Norfolk Southern to facilitate the journey.
"Big Boy" made several stops along the way include some in Indiana, where Glen and Daniel were able to see the locomotive in action.

In 2025, the Kokomo Family YMCA celebrated its 150th anniversary of serving Kokomo and Howard County.
For all that time, the organization has evolved and grown to assist its members and the community in developing healthy lifestyles, promoting youth development, and strengthening social responsibility.
That evolution continues today with the advent of new programs and opportunities, explained Trish Severns, CEO of the Kokomo Family YMCA this morning.

Severns said the membership organization has expanded its prehab and rehab service opportunities, child care programs, and therapy services.

Rotary District 6560 Governor Stephanie Moran visited the club this morning and shared how Rotary affected her life in ways she never thought possible.
Stephanie got involved in Rotary when she joined Anderson University, using it as a way to network with others and build connections.
Through that membership, she received encouragement and support through what she called "transformative Rotary relationships.
"Those connections have made me a happier, healthier individual."
She praised the city of Kokomo for rebounding after challenges found in automotive industry changes. Stephanie said communities like Kokomo need services that Rotary can help fund, but also the connections and relationships Rotary can provide.
