Celebrating National Salmon Day!

Salmon has sustained Kodiak for thousands of years. It fills freezers and smokehouses, supports local jobs, and brings neighbors together every season. This National Salmon Day, we are grateful for the fish, the waters that nurture them, and the people who care for both.

What does salmon mean to your family and our local Kodiak community? Tell us in the comments.

Each year at the JSCF reception we draw a name from the attendees and they get to give out a $500 mini grant to one of the local nonprofits. This year the mini grant was awarded to The Friends of the Talkeetna Library Talkeetna Public Library. Thanks to Mike Palmer Community Foundation for choosing them and for coming up from Palmer to attend our reception!

Thank you for showing up, Kodiak.

We had such an outstanding turnout for our 20th Anniversary + 2026 Outdoor Film Festival! Roughly 300 members, friends, and neighbors came together to celebrate and watch some incredible films.

Together, we raised approximately $11,000 in membership donations, plus another $4,500 through this year’s buoy auction.

And a BIG thank you to our filmmakers, artists, donors, members, ITN Board members, and volunteers who made this celebration possible — especially: Katie Kesling, Betsy Lund, Sandra West, Phillip Tschersich, and Eric Linscheid.

We couldn’t do this without you. Thank you for 20 years of showing up and supporting your Island Trails Network.

Here’s to the next 20!

💛 Grant Impact Spotlight: The Folk School

A Golden Heart Community Foundation grant helped The Folk School provide free, hands-on craft classes for kids and teens across Interior Alaska.

Through the Youth Series, 126 young people participated in classes ranging from sewing, drawing, weaving, and printmaking to metalworking and outdoor skills. The program also created opportunities for youth and adults to learn together, building skills, confidence, and connections along the way.

We’re proud to support programs that give local youth opportunities to get creative, learn something new, and connect with their community.

The Kodiak Community Foundation (KCF) is excited to announce that the 2026 Community Grant Cycle is officially open, Aug 17th to Sept 18th!

Since opening its first grant cycle in 2014, the Kodiak Community Foundation has awarded more than $204,485.16 in grants to nonprofits, schools, tribal organizations, municipalities, and community initiatives serving communities across the Kodiak Archipelago. During the 2025 Grant Cycle alone, KCF distributed $24,240.44 to projects that address local needs and create meaningful opportunities for residents throughout the region. These investments have supported initiatives in education, youth development, arts and culture, environmental stewardship, health and wellness, historical preservation, food security, community resilience, and countless other programs that enrich life across the archipelago.

Every grant awarded represents more than financial support, it is an investment in local leadership, innovative ideas, and organizations dedicated to strengthening our island communities. None of this would be possible without the generosity of donors who choose to invest in Kodiak's future through the Kodiak Community Foundation. The support creates permanent charitable resources that will continue serving the community for generations to come.

As we launch the 2026 Community Grant Cycle, KCF invites eligible nonprofits, schools, tribal entities, municipalities, and community organizations to apply for funding that will help bring impactful projects and innovative ideas to life. The Kodiak Community Foundation Advisory Board remains committed to providing a grant application process that is accessible, transparent, and straightforward for both first-time and returning applicants.

Organizations interested in applying are encouraged to review the grant guidelines, eligibility requirements, and application materials through KCF's online Grants Portal. Questions regarding eligibility, project development, or the application process are always welcome. Please contact Julia Ssessanga, Program Manager, at [email protected] for assistance.
As the Kodiak Community Foundation continues to grow, so does the collective impact of our donors, nonprofit partners, volunteers, and community members. Together, we are building a permanent legacy of generosity, one that empowers local organizations, strengthens communities across the Kodiak Archipelago, and ensures that today's charitable investments continue making a difference for generations to come.
