Kodiak Area Native Association - KANA

Kodiak Area Native Association - KANA To Elevate the Quality of Life of the People We Serve The primary focus of the organization is meeting the expressed needs of our beneficiaries.

The Kodiak Area Native Association was formed in 1966 as a 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation providing health and social services for the Alaska Natives of the Koniag region. KANA provides these services on behalf of the United States Government through compacts with the Indian Health Service (IHS) and the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), in each case pursuant to the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act of 1975 (the ISDEAA). KANA’s service area includes the City of Kodiak and 6 remote Alaska Native villages: Akhiok, Karluk, Larsen Bay, Old Harbor, Ouzinkie and Port Lions and encompasses 10 federally recognized Tribes of Kodiak Island. From the date of incorporation, KANA has been governed by a Board of Directors with varying representation from each of the villages, including one representative for the “at large” Native population on Kodiak Island. Services provided by KANA include, but are not limited to: Ambulatory Medical Clinic, Dental Clinic, Pharmacy, Community Health Aide Program, Substance Abuse Prevention, Intervention and Outreach, Social Services, Mental Health, and Youth Prevention Projects. Other services, provided by State of Alaska and other funding sources, include but are not limited to: Vocational Rehabilitation, Employment and Training, Childcare and Education Assistance Services, Economic Development, Public Safety, Elder Support Programs, Emergency Medical Services, WIC Nutrition Services, and Infant Learning.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month! 🩷 Join KANA as we uplift and promote breast cancer awareness all month long.

Did you know? 1 in 8 women in the United States will face breast cancer during their lifetime, but thanks to increased awareness, early detection, and advancements in treatment, deaths from breast cancer in the U.S have dropped by 44% since 1989.

Talk with your health care provider about your risk factors, when to begin screening, and how often to continue. Together we stand strong against breast cancer today and every day.

Call (907) 486-9870 today to schedule an appointment with your provider, and encourage the people you love to do the same. Early detection saves lives.

Yesterday, KANA staff wore orange in recognition of Orange Shirt Day, honoring the children who never came home, the Survivors who did, and the families and communities who continue to carry the impacts of boarding schools today.

Wearing orange is a small act. Remembering, listening, and carrying these stories forward is the work.

Every Child Matters.
