Between 1869 and the 1960s, hundreds of thousands of Native children were removed from their homes and placed in boarding schools operated by the federal government and various churches. Often, the children were intentionally placed in boarding schools far away from their homes, cut off from their cultures. The children were punished for speaking their Native languages and engaging in their cultural practices. The children were forced to cut their hair, speak English, and wear American clothing. The goal was forced assimilation and the destruction of Native culture. The motto of the boarding school policy "Kill the Indian, Save the Man."

The Native children at these boarding schools suffered multiple forms of abuse. Many of them never made it back home, and they have yet to be accounted for by the federal government

There were over 526 Indian boarding schools in the United States during the 19th and 20th centuries. Some of them are still operating today. Policy changes beginning in the 1970s greatly improved federally operated schools and Native education. However, the impact of the trauma and loss of culture in Indian boarding schools can still be felt in Native communities today

September 30th is the National Day of Remembrance for Indian Boarding Schools. We encourage you to visit BoardingSchoolHealing.org to learn more
