Please join us for a community-focused fundraising event with the Knoxville Track Club called the Hero’s Hill Challenge, which will take place on March 21, 2026, starting at 8:00 a.m. at Johnson University, 7900 Johnson Drive, Knoxville. We expect all competitions and the awards ceremony to conclude no later than noon.

The event will feature a 1-mile fun run, a 5K, and an endurance challenge that can be completed individually or as teams of four. The endurance challenge will consist of a 1-mile run, 140 burpees, 140 squats, and 140 lunges, followed by a final 1-mile run to the finish line. The number 140 represents the current number of homeless veterans in Knox County, highlighting the critical need for support in our community.

In addition to the athletic events, we plan to host food and retail vendors, creating a family-friendly atmosphere and encouraging broader community participation throughout the morning.

We are deeply enthusiastic about this project and all that it has the potential to accomplish. As the mayor has said many times, “No veteran should be without a place to call home in the country they swore to defend.” Being part of bringing comfort, dignity, and stability to these veterans is central to our mission.

You can register as a participant or sign up as a volunteer.

KGIS Announcement

At its meeting of this past Thursday, December 18, 2025, the KGIS Policy Board unanimously appointed Chris Halcomb as the next Geographic Information Officer (GIO) of KGIS.

Many of you already know Chris. He has been an employee with KGIS since 2004, serving in different roles: first as KGIS's GIS Analyst, then as Landbase Administrator, and most recently (for the past 14+ years) as KGIS's Database Administrator.

Chris replaces Keith Stump, who is scheduled to retire from KGIS on January 2, 2026 after 37+ years of employment.

The GIO serves as the Executive Director of the KGIS organization.

Congratulations on your new assignment Chris! Your experience and skills will be of great benefit to KGIS, and we look forward to all the future accomplishments of this organization. Feel free to pass this Good News to others throughout your respective organizations.

KGIS System Upgrade Technical Issues

Some applications currently not working.

KGIS personnel are aware of several technical issues with KGIS applications as a result of the recent system-wide upgrade. We hope to get the applications back to full operation very soon and apologize for the inconvenience. The applications with known issues include the following:

KGIS Maps:
To accommodate the latest software version, several cartographic adjustments have been made to the initial Standard base map. Over the next several months, KGIS staff will continue to "adjust" this map to better display the many (and different) types of items that appear on this map.

The Advanced Address search does not FIND newly created addresses. This applies to any address created/modified since November 15. (It should be noted, however, that the underlying base map may indeed still display those newly created addresses). Alternative workaround: Use the "I Want To...Address" search tool in Mobile Maps or Planning Cases. That tool has access to the most recent address data.

Neighborhood Groups. The Business Groups layer does not display. KGIS awaiting a temporary fix from software vendor.

Multiple Apps: The PRINT map tool doesn't work for the Standard map theme. Suggested Workaround: choose a different Map Theme, or perhaps take a screenshot using PrtScn/Copy/Paste functions from one's keyboard.

This issue is found in the following web apps:
