Our Mark B. Whitaker (MBW) Water Treatment Plant has been around for a century! A lot has changed over the course of its history, including advancements in technology.

In the early 1980s, a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system was first installed at MBW. This system monitors and controls all water treatment and distribution systems, helping ensure everything runs smoothly. Our plant operators monitor these systems 24/7, 365 days a year.

SCADA is still in use to this day. While the system has been significantly modernized over the years, its mission remains the same to support the delivery of safe, high-quality drinking water.

Keeping our water, wastewater, and natural gas infrastructure operating efficiently is a crucial part of serving our customers!

Our System Maintenance – Pipes Department plays an important role in that work. They perform preventative and corrective maintenance on KUB’s 99 pump and booster stations, 34 storage facilities and tanks, 45 regulator stations, and three gate stations. Their teamwork and focus on reliable services and safety help keep our systems operating smoothly every day.

🎉 We invite you to celebrate our water treatment plant’s 100th anniversary with us! 🎉

KUB customers can enter a lottery for the chance to get an exclusive, behind-the-scenes tour of KUB’s Mark B. Whitaker (MBW) Water Treatment Plant this October to see how KUB provides safe, high-quality drinking water.

Space is limited, so participants will be selected at random through a lottery system.

KUB is committed to providing safe, reliable natural gas service to its customers. As part of this effort, KUB is replacing existing diaphragm natural gas meters with modern Sonix meters that provide enhanced safety features using innovative technology.

One of the biggest advantages of these new meters is the real-time data they provide, allowing customers to see their gas consumption daily in more detail. The new meters are also much smaller and offer more visibility on safety-related data such as temperature, pressure, and flow rates.

As we look back on 100 years of our Mark B. Whitaker Water Treatment Plant's (MBW) history, we proudly remember the people who helped shape it.

Jimmy England joined KUB in the 1980s when we took over the wastewater treatment system from the City of Knoxville, then served as the MBW plant supervisor.

During his 45-year tenure, Jimmy was a familiar and respected presence, making a lasting impression on the people he worked alongside.

Jimmy's dedication and leadership will always remain part of MBW's story.
