MAINTENANCE I

The Knox County Highway Department will be accepting applications for one (1) Maintenance I highway maintainer position. Applicants with a valid Class A or B Illinois Commercial Driver’s License with air brake endorsement are preferred. If hired, the applicant is required to complete CDL Training within 6 months. Prior work experience in highway construction, snow plowing and heavy equipment operation is preferred. Excellent benefits provided including group medical and retirement. Starting wage is $23.18 per hour. The successful applicant will be subject to a pre-employment physical and drug test.

Heads up, Knox County! U.S. 150 near the Spoon River bridge is closed for at least 72 hours due to an oversized load with a broken trailer. A specialized crane is needed for repairs.

Detour route 👉 Use I-74 to re-enter U.S. 150 via the IL 97/U.S. 150 exit east of Knoxville. An additional alternate route is IL 180 to IL 167 to U.S. 34 to U.S. 150/Henderson Street.

COUNTY HIGHWAY 15
ROAD CLOSURE
County Highway 15 will be closed at the BNSF Railroad underpass in Dahinda on Monday morning, August 25, at 6 a.m. The railroad will be making repairs to the underpass at that location. We are being told the work should be completed in 2 to 3 weeks.

COUNTY HIGHWAY 12
ROAD CLOSURE

County Highway 12 will be closed at the BNSF Railroad Crossing in the Old Appleton bottom on Monday morning, August 4, at 6 a.m. The railroad will be making repairs to the crossing at that location. The work should be completed and the road opened on Wednesday, August 6, at 5 p.m.

ROAD CLOSED FOR OIL AND CHIP APPLICATION

County Highway 12: U.S. 150 to Oak Run Entrance

On Tuesday morning, July 15, 2025, at 7 a.m., we will be closing County Highway 12 from U.S. 150 north to the Oak Run Entrance. We will be applying oil and chip to the existing surface. The work should be completed and the road re-opened Tuesday afternoon.

We will give the seal coat 24 hrs. to cure and we will begin brooming any loose chips off on Wednesday morning.

Route 167 near Route 180 is currently closed East of Victoria for a culvert replacement. The closure is scheduled to last approximately two weeks. Route 180 is open but under construction S. of Route 167. Please use caution while traveling in the area. -VCFPD

KNOX COUNTY IS SEEKING QUALIFIED CANDIDATES FOR THE POSITION OF ASSISTANT COUNTY ENGINEER

The successful candidate shall meet the following requirements:
• Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Illinois.
• Bachelor’s Degree (B.S.) in Civil or Structural Engineering.
• Minimum of 7 - 10 years of experience with highway design, construction and maintenance
• Must be able to respond to problems in a decisive and timely manner.
• Must be able manage all matters relating to accounting and auditing practices and procedures for both internal and external auditors.
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well with all types of individuals.
• Must be able to work under the guidelines of generally accepted rules and practices as set by the Department and County Board.
• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret engineering and business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
• Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
• Valid Illinois Driver’s License
• Continuing Education and training in the job is required.
