🚒🌊 TURN AROUND, DON’T DROWN! 🌊🚒

Today, members of the Knightstown Wayne Township Volunteer Fire Department responded to a vehicle that had become stranded in flooded roadway.

Thankfully, our crews were able to respond and assist, but this is a perfect reminder of just how quickly floodwater can turn a normal roadway into a very dangerous situation.

Flooded roads can hide washed-out areas, deep drop-offs, debris, and moving water. It may look passable, but you simply don’t know what’s underneath.

Calls like this don’t happen every day, but they are exactly why fire departments train for water and vehicle rescue situations. When the call comes in, we need to be ready.

Commercial Vehicle Fire – I-70 Westbound Exit Ramp (MM 115)

Last night at 9:15 p.m., the Knightstown Fire Department was dispatched to a reported commercial vehicle fire on the Interstate 70 westbound exit ramp at Mile Marker 115.

The first arriving unit arrived on scene at 9:24 p.m. to find a semi-trailer with heavy smoke and fire showing from the trailer, with a visible orange glow from inside. Firefighters immediately initiated an aggressive fire attack, deploying two handlines to quickly bring the fire under control.

The fire was placed under control at 9:40 p.m. and extinguished at 9:55 p.m.

While the trailer sustained significant fire damage, firefighters successfully prevented the fire from extending into the tractor. The driver was able to safely exit the vehicle prior to our arrival, and no injuries were reported.

To allow crews to safely operate, the I-70 westbound exit ramp at Mile Marker 115 was temporarily closed during the incident before reopening to traffic.

Knightstown Fire Department responded with Engine 21, Tanker 24, and Grass 28 and was assisted by:

Commercial vehicle fires present unique challenges due to the size of the vehicle, fuel load, and potential cargo involved. Thanks to the coordinated efforts of all responding agencies, firefighters were able to quickly contain the fire to the trailer and prevent further damage.

Commercial Vehicle Fire – State Road 109 & I-70

At 7:29 p.m., the Knightstown Fire Department responded to the intersection of State Road 109 and Interstate 70 for a reported commercial vehicle fire.

Upon arrival, firefighters found a flatbed semi-trailer with heavy smoke and fire coming from the rear axle and wheel assembly. Crews quickly deployed a hose line, bringing the fire under control within five minutes of beginning fire suppression operations and extinguishing the fire within ten minutes.

The driver advised firefighters he believed a blown tire led to the fire. No injuries were reported.

While crews operated on scene, the I-70 eastbound off-ramp at State Road 109 was temporarily closed to allow firefighters to safely extinguish the fire. The ramp has since reopened.

We appreciate the assistance provided by law enforcement and Davis Towing in safely managing the incident and clearing the scene.

As a reminder, motorists who notice smoke, unusual odors, or mechanical issues while traveling should safely pull over as soon as possible and contact 911. Early reporting can help prevent a small mechanical issue from becoming a much larger fire.
