How well do you know Klamath County history? Soon, local junior high and high school students will have a new way to find out -- and to discover the stories behind the people, places and communities that shaped our region.

Thanks to a generous donation from the Klamath County Historical Society and Klamath County Museum Foundation, history and social studies teachers in Klamath County schools received a new local history trivia game for use in their classrooms, along with copies of the 16-volume Klamath Echoes series, published by the Klamath County Historical Society in the 1960s and 1970s. The games questions and answers are drawn from the series.

The game features 100 trivia cards, each pairing a historical question with an image, with the answer on the back. Questions range from how Keno got its name and why Fort Klamath was established to what nationality of settlers arrived in the Malin area in 1909 and 1910 -- and which local crop was shipped as far away as Guam and Honolulu.

The trivia cards were created by Mary Nobel and Linda Hammerich, with assistance from longtime Klamath County Museum volunteer Dan Hawkes, who searched museum archives for historical images. The project was funded through a grant from the Western Wind Foundation, which supports projects that encourage student interest in local history.

Their goal is simple: make local history fun, accessible and something students can explore for themselves. Thank you for your support of our students and schools!!

The Klamath Echoes series is available for purchase at the Klamath County Museum gift shop. Plans are also underway to eventually make the trivia game available there.

🏛️ Keno: After a group debated what to name the town, Mr. Ferree reportedly said, “Name it after my dog and be done with it.”
🪖 Fort Klamath: It was established to protect travel through the Klamath country along the emigrant road.
🥔 The crop: Potatoes — which have been shipped as far away as Guam and Honolulu.
🌿 The pond lily seeds: Wocus. The seeds were traditionally cooked and eaten as mush.
🏘️ Klamath County’s first town: Linkville, founded in 1867 by George Nurse. Lumber for its first building came from Fort Klamath.

📖 More books. More possibilities. Klamath County School District has received a $5,000 grant from the Roundhouse Foundation to expand the collections at four KCSD school libraries -- Keno Elementary, Peterson Elementary, Gilchrist Jr/Sr High School, and Lost River Jr/Sr High School.

The grant will help us purchase high-interest fiction and nonfiction books that reflect the lives, interests and experiences of rural our students -- including books about hunting, fishing, camping, outdoor adventures, agriculture and career pathways.

Over the past two years, our school libraries have worked hard to remove outdated and worn-out books. This grant will help us replenish those shelves with new books that students can relate to and help inspire them to explore new interests.

We’re grateful to the Roundhouse Foundation for investing in our students and communities. The Roundhouse Foundation is a private family foundation based in Sisters, Ore., that supports creative solutions to the challenges associated with rural culture and the landscapes of the Pacific Northwest. LISTENING ACROSS KCSD: What do you value most about your school and community? And what would you like to see us improve?

Those were two of the questions Superintendent Cole asked families Wednesday night at Brixner Junior High School during the fourth of Klamath County School District’s 15 community engagement sessions.

The conversation was just that -- a conversation. Families shared what they appreciate about KCSD, what they hope to see continue, and where they see opportunities for improvement.

Superintendent Cole will meet with Bonanza area families and community members tonight (Sept. 4) at 5:30 p.m. in Bonanza’s high school gym before the first home football game against Lost River. And we’re serving hot dogs!

This is only the beginning. We’ll keep listening and learning from our communities throughout the year. ❤️

A 'RELENTLESS' FIRST DAY! All Bonanza students received matching “Relentless” T-shirts on their first day of school this year -- a visible reminder of the mindset Bonanza schools hope to build in students and staff: perseverance, resilience, and a refusal to let obstacles stand in the way of growth.

Each year, Bonanza Jr./Sr. High School Principal Jordan Osborn and the Bonanza K-12 leadership team select a theme to guide the school community. This year’s theme, Relentless, encourages students and staff to keep moving forward, even when the work is difficult.

“Relentless is a commitment to how we approach our work every day,” Osborn said. “Being relentless means refusing to let obstacles, setbacks or difficult circumstances lower our expectations for ourselves or our students.”

The message is intended to be modeled by adults as much as taught to students.
“Our students are always watching,” Osborn said. “They learn far more from what we model than what we say.”

“Relentless encompasses several themes we’ve focused on in the past -- perseverance, working hard, believing in yourself and becoming better but it brings them together around one central idea: don’t let obstacles get in your way,” he said.

Bonanza’s annual themes began eight years ago when Osborn became principal. Past themes have included How Ya Livin’, All In, Bo-Town Pride, Be Better, We Believe, We Work and Serve.

For students such as student council president Isaac Noble, the tradition also is about strengthening school community. Noble helped pass out the T-shirts to his classmates as they entered school on Tuesday.

“Being part of student council gives us a chance to give back to our school and do something meaningful for other students,” Noble said.

For Osborn, that sense of belonging is an important part of the tradition. Students often continue wearing their school shirts for years, he said, carrying a visible reminder of their connection to Bonanza -- and to a community that believes in them.

FIRST DAY VIBES! More than 6,800 students are returning to school this week in the Klamath County School District. Most of our students kicked off their school year today (Aug. 31) and the rest will begin classes Tuesday when all upper high school grades return and kindergartners begin a phase-in week.

Many of the district’s secondary schools welcomed just seventh-, eighth-, and ninth-graders Tuesday, giving them a chance to get to know the school routine before being joined by older students. Students attended abbreviated classes and participated in fun field day activities.

Today, we were able to capture and share photos from Shasta, Malin, Mazama, and Keno. Check back throughout the week for more photos.
