City of Kittitas

City of Kittitas Kittitas is a city in Kittitas County, Washington, United States. Kittitas is the name that American Indians called this valley. for Chicago Milwaukee, St.

(Pronounced Kit-Ti-Tash) Kittit, meaning white chalk, and Tash, place of existence. There is a bank of such chalk located at the Menastash ford along the Yakima River below Ellensburg. The Indians used this white chalk for painting themselves and their horses. The Indians referred to the entire valley as Kittitash. Later the whites changed the name to Kittitas. Fur trade brought the first white ma

n to the Kittitas Valley. Later the valley was known as “Cattlemen’s Paradise”, as there was water and lush pastures for grazing. In 1908 Kittitas was surveyed and platted by Milwaukee Land Co. Paul, and Pacific Railroad Co. This one time railroad town and farm service center now offers a small town atmosphere.
