Rotary Club of Kirkland

Rotary Club of Kirkland Service Above Self Intercity meetings were popular and it was customary for visiting clubs to put on the program for the host club. By Jerry Marsh

Service Above Self

On August 23, 1937, the Seattle Rotary Club (the fourth club established by Rotary) chartered the Kirkland Rotary Club with 41 members. Kirkland was the 120th club to be chartered, and early meetings in the American Legion Hall involved building of acquaintances, developing attendance within our club, and with not so easily reached other local clubs, none of which existed on th

e Eastside. Meeting facilities were scarce during the war years, but a community building for war housing near the Houghton ship yards was used until the Crabapple Restaurant opened in Bellevue and Monday evening meetings started early in 1946. Meeting in Bellevue signaled the need for new clubs on the east side of Lake Washington. Conversations with Bothell business people resulted in the Northshore Club being chartered on April 14, 1958. Subsequent planning resulted in Bellevue Rotary being chartered on March 17, 1961. The Kirkland club went on to establish Rotary clubs on Mercer Island, in Redmond, and in Issaquah. After a long period of meetings at the Flame Restaurant in Kirkland, and other locations, the Kirkland Club moved to Carillon Point in the Woodmark Hotel. After many years at Carillon Point, the pandemic forced the end of in-person meetings for nearly two years. When people began gathering again, the club resumed its in-person service activities at the Courtyard by Marriott west of Totem Lake. Meetings are held on Monday night as established years ago in Bellevue at the Crabapple Restaurant.

On Monday, June 8th, 2026, the Rotary Club of Kirkland held its June social at the Kirkland Performance Center (KPC).

The gathering took place in the 350 Club, sponsored by Sue and Gary Cohn. Beautiful room, where we were given an introduction to the KPC by Suzette. The KPC has so much to offer!

This social was also the opportunity for prospective members to meet the club members in a relaxed and informal setting.

Food and drinks were enjoyed by everyone, served by the super friendly Val. All in all, another great Rotary Club of Kirkland social.

The second Monday of the month is normally devoted to informal social gatherings of club members and their guests at various locations around the Greater Kirkland area.

Rotary Club of Kirkland's social events are a great opportunity for prospective members to get to know the club members in an informal setting.

This month's social will be held in the 350 Club of the Kirkland Performance Center (KPC).

Rotarians and guests are advised to enter via the South side door between the KPC and the Kirkland Senior Center. Parking can be limited in the parking lot between the KPC and the city swimming pool, so attendees may wish to utilize the city's free parking garage beneath the Kirkland Library.

See you all there!

On Monday, June 1st, 2026, the Rotary Club of Kirkland held the first in-person meeting of this month at the Prosecco Restaurant & Pizzeria.

The meeting was well-attended, cheerful, and lively, with many guests and prospective members.

After the four-way test, we covered the usual agenda topics: a recap of the various committees –community services, international services, youth services, auction and gala, etc.– the Rotary moment, and of course the raffle! But today’s meeting’s main event was the Rotary Scholarship Award Ceremony.

Each year, the Rotary Club of Kirkland, Washington awards scholarships to local students for their higher education at accredited institutions in the state of Washington.

The students selected this year are talented academically, enthusiastic, and already demonstrate how to be a positive driving force for their peer students and the community, through multiple outlets in and outside of their respective high schools!

Well done to Sanjana Medikurthi, Cambria Ballew, Ryan Brackett, Marlin Wong, and Aimal Samir. You deserve it!

Food was collected from attendees as part of our club's ongoing contribution to St John’s Church food pantry.

After the regular meeting agenda, we covered our special topic for this month: the Outstanding Educator Awards!

This year the Outstanding Educators were Ryan Palmer from Lake Washington High School, Steve Juzeler from Juanita High School, and Jackie Lowdermilk Emerson K-12 School.
They were recognized by their peers and colleagues, and the Rotary Club of Kirkland, for their outstanding contribution to their respective schools, both for academic achievements and for everything they do for their students above and beyond education.

Thank you Jackie, Ryan, and Steve, for all you do for these students and the community.

On Saturday, April 18th, the Rotary Club of Kirkland spent the day at Kirkland Marina Park to participate in the Day Out for Autism and support the amazing Washington Autism Alliance.

The Day Out for Autism featured a Sensory Sensitive Resource Fair and a 3k walk/move your way.

The weather was great, all the participants had great activities focusing on sensory stimulation, and the event was well attended.

The Rotary Club of Kirkland gave away Hot Wheels, colorful Play-Doh, and Autism Barbie dolls.

Whether at the Rotary Club of Kirkland's booth or volunteering as a greeter, the opportunity to speak with everyone was extremely touching and fun at the same time.

We are already looking forward to next year's event!
