South Barber Elementary’s Title I Teacher Mrs. Hughes recently led a fun, interactive extension activity with her fifth-grade group to connect reading vocabulary with real-world persistence!
After diving into their Magnetic Literacy unit on "Real Confidence," students put their learning into action with a paper helicopter flight lab. Students tested one variable at a time, predicted outcomes, recorded data, and discussed their observations after each trial.
The lab served as a powerful hands-on metaphor: just like refining a flying machine, building true confidence requires trying something new, making adjustments, and trying again. This lesson perfectly supports our school-wide initiative to teach students how to persist through challenges. Great work, Mrs. Hughes and these fine 5th grade students!
