Week 8 at Kinston High School was another exciting week filled with meaningful learning experiences, student accomplishments, school spirit, and opportunities that continue to prepare our Vikings for success beyond the classroom! As we approach the end of the first nine weeks, our students and staff remain focused on making every day count while celebrating the many great things happening throughout our school.
One of this week's highlights was our Economics and Personal Finance students participating in the Reality of Money simulation, an interactive financial literacy experience developed by the State Employees' Credit Union in partnership with NC Cooperative Extension, Lenoir County 4-H, and Lenoir County Public Schools. Students were assigned fictional profiles that included careers, wages, educational backgrounds, and family circumstances. Working alongside community volunteers, students navigated real-world financial decisions, including budgeting for housing, transportation, food, and other monthly expenses.
Student leadership and future readiness were also front and center! We celebrated the kickoff of our Chick-fil-A Leadership Academy, with six selected students beginning an exciting journey focused on leadership development, service, and making a positive impact in their community. Additionally, all 10th-grade students participated in the PreACT, an important opportunity to assess academic readiness, identify strengths, and begin preparing for future college and career opportunities.
Our classrooms continued to showcase strong instruction, student creativity, and purposeful technology integration.Teachers engaged students in meaningful, standards-aligned learning experiences while using technology to enhance instruction, encourage collaboration, and support student understanding. From student-created products to engaging classroom discussions and hands-on activities, our Vikings continued demonstrating that learning is an active process!
This week, we also celebrated National School Lunch Week, recognizing the hardworking members of our School Nutrition team who serve our students each day. Special treats throughout the week brought additional excitement to lunchtime and reminded us of the important role our cafeteria staff play in supporting student success. We appreciate everything they do for our school community!
Creativity, talent, and Viking pride were on full display at the Lenoir County Agricultural Fair! Congratulations to our talented Kinston High School art students who earned recognition for their outstanding artwork. We are incredibly proud of their creativity, dedication, and artistic accomplishments!

Wednesday, our campus turned pink as students and staff participated in Pink Out Day in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It was wonderful to see so many members of our Viking family come together to promote awareness, demonstrate support, and recognize the importance of standing alongside those impacted by breast cancer.
Congratulations to KHS student Yasmin Sheffield for being
selected as a winner of the Black Girl Joy Challenge!Yasmin was awarded a $550 grant from the Southern Black Girls and Women's Consortium to support a community-based initiative focused on spreading joy, promoting positive mental health, and empowering young ladies. Her winning proposal, a “Joy and Paint” event for teen girls, will create an opportunity for creativity, connection, self-expression, and encouragement. We are incredibly proud of Yasmin for taking the initiative to turn her vision into a meaningful opportunity to positively impact others. This is a wonderful example of student leadership, creativity, and service in action!
Our Viking athletes also gave us another reason to celebrate with an exciting JV Football victory over Farmville Central! Congratulations to our players and coaches for their hard work, determination, and continued commitment to representing KHS with pride. We also continued helping our seniors prepare for their final year of high school memories through Senior Portrait Make-Up Day.
As Week 8 comes to a close, we are reminded that excellence is built through the small things we do consistently each day. Whether students are developing financial literacy skills, preparing for college and careers, growing as leaders, demonstrating creativity, competing in athletics, or supporting meaningful causes, every experience contributes to their growth and future success.
