Common Ground of Eastern North Carolina, Inc. Growing whole food, whole people and whole communities in Greene, Jones and Lenoir counties

CURRENT PROJECT: restoring a former flood buyout property located in a food desert in east Kinston. We are building a food park - a community green space for outdoor recreation and food production. We invite everyone to participate in our community-based effort to create a food park. You can grow food by joining the group of gardeners at our community garden, learn beekeeping with others at our n

ew community apiary, or help care for our heirloom fruit orchard and grapevine. We also need help with our newest food park project: building a quarter-mile walking trail. Plenty of activities to choose from; growing community while enjoying the outdoors!

The rain drops sure are a welcome sight! 🌧
We're glad the forecast finally panned out and hope the rest of the rain in the near forecast comes through too to knock back some of this drought 🏜
How are your seedlings faring this Spring?

Garden Bed Lasagna 🍝
We use raised garden beds at our community garden to grow most of our produce 🍅
Those big shiny tubs aren't filled from bottom to brim with just soil--they're intentionally layered 🥞

What's the buzz?
Common Ground is not only a community garden, but also an apiary 🐝🍯
Last week, volunteers noted the bees were uncharacteristically active.
Thankfully bee keeper, Lee, was on hand to help the bees and provide some sweet information 🍯 about our busy pollinator pals 🐝

💛The bees may have outgrown their hive and were swarming, going to search for a new space.
😱The is looks like a startling frenzy, but Lee explained the bees are typically docile while swarming.
🏠 Lee provided the bees with a new space, then collected the swarm to deposit in the hive.
👸 Thankfully it appears the queen was successfully caught and the bees are settling into their new space (Lee has since provided a larger hive than the one shown during the swarm capture).

Thank you, Karla G., for thinking to pass on these pots/planters to Common Ground!

Whether its through volunteering, sharing word, or thinking of the garden for passing on supplies like this, we are grateful for involvement from our community and look forward to continuing to grow together 🌱

🤤 More sweet, fresh figs from our trees in the orchard along Hwy 11!
🌳These fig trees are about 10 years old and have been generous with their fig production.

🤞Hopefully we will see even more in the next few years from our newly planted figs along E Vernon.

🌭Come check it out during our Community Cookout 🌭 Common Ground - Kinston, NC on October 12th!

👏Thank you to volunteer Larry for the donation of the newly planted fig trees
