25 years gone by... just like it was yesterday. Never forget.

🚒 In most of Ohio, when you call for help, the people who come are not on shift. They were at their own kitchen table four minutes ago.

Ohio has well over a thousand fire departments, and the large majority of them run on volunteers or mostly volunteers. In small towns and townships all across this state, the roster is a farmer, a welder, a nurse, a school bus driver, a guy who runs a body shop, and a nineteen year old who joined because his dad did. They carry pagers. They leave dinner. They leave church. They leave their kid's game in the third inning and somebody else's parent finishes watching it for them.

They also train constantly on their own time for certifications the public never sees. They run the pancake breakfast that pays for the equipment. They put the truck in the Fourth of July parade and let every kid in town climb on it. And when it is two in the morning and it is somebody's barn or somebody's house, they show up anyway, for a stipend that in a lot of places would not cover the gas. 🧡

That whole system only works because people keep saying yes to it, year after year, with no real reason except that it is their town. Who was the person on your local department that everybody knew would be first on the truck?

We would like to send a heartfelt thank you to Linda with Never Muzzled for this amazing donation to our department.
Never Muzzled donated two sets of pet oxygen masks, which will allow our firefighters to provide oxygen to pets rescued from fires. These masks can make a tremendous difference when every second counts.

As many of us are pet owners and animal lovers, this donation is especially meaningful to us, and I know many pet parents throughout our community will feel the same. Our pets are more than animals — they are family, and their lives matter too.

We delivered Pet Oxygen Mask Kits to Burghill/Vernon today. They were greatly appreciated by our firefighters. Thank you to everyone who supported this fundraising event. Legacy Dog Rescue

As the 250th Anniversary of our Independence Day rapidly approaches, we all know that not much makes a celebration better than fireworks! Ohio allows private fireworks displays during certain times and with specific caveats. Vernon Township follows Ohio law; there are no special township ordinances for private fireworks displays. While we recommend a professional show, a private show can be just as fun if you follow the safety rules and laws surrounding the shows. Search & Rescue Training

We would like to extend our gratitude to BROOKFIELD FIRE/EMS for hosting and supporting this training exercise, particularly in simulating the rescue of a downed firefighter. On Saturday, our department dedicated several hours to training in search and rescue operations. For a more detailed overview and explanation of the training, please refer to our previous post we shared.

Sharing this post as I don't think I could have said it better or explained what all the training was in detail. Our department used a fog machine to imitate smoke in a real fire. I had the pleasure of being able to be inside with my department and see what they see and what they have to do in a real situation. I will share my pictures in another post, you will see a lot of fog (smoke) and very little firefighters. I can tell you, I couldn't see anything at times in there. To go up and down stairs was extremely hard as I couldn't even see the steps or my own feet.
