With the recent warm weather, ice on local lakes may still look thick, but it can weaken and melt much faster than many people realize. Conditions can change quickly and what appears safe may not be.

Last night, members of the Kinnelon Volunteer Fire Company (KVFC) refreshed their ice rescue training to ensure they are prepared should an emergency occur.

As temperatures fluctuate, please stay off the ice and keep safety in mind when enjoying the outdoors.

🚒 SHOW US YOUR HYDRANT! 🚒 - Who has the best cleaned out Hydrant in Kinnelon??

💛 Do you know what that yellow Maltese cross in the street is?
That yellow Maltese cross painted on the pavement is a hydrant locator. It tells you exactly where the hydrant is, even when it’s buried under snow.

❄️ How to help — it’s easy!

Step 1️⃣: Find the yellow Maltese cross in the roadway
Step 2️⃣: Start digging in that direction
Step 3️⃣: Clear at least 3 feet around the hydrant on all sides (don’t forget the back!)

⏱️ Seconds matter in a fire. A clear hydrant can save a home or a life.

With the amount of snow we received, it’s so important to dig out the fire hydrant in front of your home or on your street. 🚒❄️

Clearing a hydrant doesn’t just help your home, it helps everyone in your neighborhood by giving firefighters quick access in an emergency. Thank you for helping keep our community safe!

Winter Safety Reminder ❄️

As we continue through winter weather, please take a few minutes to help keep your property and your neighbors safe:

🚒 Clear Snow Around Fire Hydrants
If there’s a fire hydrant near your home, please keep it completely clear of snow and ice. In an emergency, every second counts, and firefighters need immediate access.

🔥 Check Furnace & Boiler Exhaust Pipes
During and after snowfall, make sure all exhaust and intake pipes for furnaces, boilers, and generators are clear of snow and ice. Blocked exhaust piping can cause dangerous carbon monoxide buildup inside your home.

A good rule of thumb:
-Clear at least 3 feet around hydrants
-Ensure exhaust pipes are fully visible and unobstructed
-Always place fireplace ashes in a heavy metal container with a tight-fitting metal lid. Store the container outside on a non-combustible surface (concrete or stone), at least 10 feet away from the home, decks, or any combustible materials

🚒 Congratulations & Thank You to Our Volunteer Fire Company Leadership 🚒

The Kinnelon Volunteer Fire Company would like to extend our sincere congratulations to Chief Tom Stearn and 1st Assistant Chief Frank Pirog on their swearing-in last night at Kinnelon’s 104th Reorganizational Meeting. We are proud to have both of you leading our Fire Company and thank you for your continued dedication to serving the Kinnelon community.

We would also like to express our deep gratitude to outgoing Chief Andrew Heilmann for his outstanding service, leadership, and direction over the past several years. Your commitment, professionalism, and steady guidance have left a lasting impact on our department and helped position the KVFC for continued success.
