CLAYTON TUCKER SIGNS TWO-TERM PLEDGE, CALLS FOR TERM LIMITS ON TEXAS STATEWIDE ELECTED EXECUTIVE OFFICES

AUSTIN, TEXAS — Texas Agriculture Commissioner candidate Clayton Tucker announced today that he has signed a pledge to serve no more than two four-year terms if elected.

Tucker also said he will ask the Texas Legislature in 2027 to propose a constitutional amendment limiting all Texas statewide elected executive offices to two terms.

The Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Comptroller, Land Commissioner and Agriculture Commissioner would be limited to two four-year terms. Railroad Commissioners would be limited to two six-year terms.

“Public office should be a period of service, not a lifetime career,” Tucker said. “Eight years is enough for me, and Texans should have the opportunity to decide whether reasonable term limits should apply across statewide government.”

Texas currently has no term limits for these offices. Any change would require approval by two-thirds of both legislative chambers and then a majority vote of Texans.

Gov. Greg Abbott first entered statewide office in 1996 and has accumulated more than 29 years of service in statewide positions. Tucker said long tenures illustrate why Texas should have a serious discussion about political turnover and entrenched power.

“This is not about one person or one party,” Tucker said. “Regular turnover brings new leadership, new ideas and greater accountability while helping reduce the influence of entrenched political and special interests.”

Tucker cited George Washington’s decision to leave the presidency after two terms and return to private life as an enduring example of servant leadership.

“Elected officials should serve, accomplish what they can, and eventually return home to their farms, ranches, businesses and communities to live under the laws, regulations, and policies they helped create,” Tucker said.
