This 4th of July we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence! Have fun with family and friends, but do it safely and responsibly.

The GTSC and the New York State STOP-DWI Foundation remind motorists that their “Have a Plan” mobile app is available for Apple, Android and Windows smartphones. The app enables New Yorkers to locate and call a taxi or rideshare service and program a designated driver list. It also provides information on DWI laws and penalties and provides a way to report a suspected impaired driver.

The New York State Police, GTSC and NHTSA recommend these simple tips to prevent impaired driving:
• Plan a safe way home before the fun begins
• Before drinking, designate a sober driver
• If you’re impaired, use a taxi or rideshare, call a sober friend or family member, or use public transportation
• Use your community’s sober ride program
• If you suspect a driver is drunk or impaired on the road, don’t hesitate to contact local law enforcement
• If you know someone who is about to drive or ride while impaired, take their keys and help them make other arrangements to get to where they are going safely.

New York State Police Wall of Honor - Today we Remember Sergeant/Station Commander Charles R. Salaway

Sergeant/Station Commander Charles R. Salaway, 55, passed away on June 9, 2018, from cancer stemming from his assignment at the World Trade Center site following the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. After the events of 9/11, Sergeant/Station Commander Salaway was assigned aide in the search and recovery efforts in New York City.

Sergeant/Station Commander Salaway entered the State Police on October 1, 1990, and served with the State Police for 27 years. He served in Troop B, G, K and the Executive Services Detail.

Sergeant/Station Commander is survived by his wife and their five children.

New York State Police Wall of Honor - Today we Remember Corporal Arthur M. Diffendale

On June 14, 1951, Corporal Arthur M. Diffendale, 33, was shot and killed by a cattle rustler on the Winnie Hill Road near the City of Oneonta. Corporal Diffendale stopped a truck for vehicle and traffic violations. Witnesses said the driver exited the truck with a r***e and shot Corporal Diffendale as he approached. He died as a result of a chest wound while enroute to the hospital. Subsequent investigation revealed that the truck, license plates and cattle being transported were stolen. The assailant was captured, convicted, and sentenced to a term of life imprisonment. However, he was paroled and subsequently arrested by another Trooper for illegal possession of a handgun.

Corporal Diffendale enlisted in Troop “K” on July 1, 1940, and was granted a Military Leave of Absence during World War II. He returned to the State Police on November 16, 1945.

New York State Police Wall of Honor - Today we Remember Trooper Robert Dunning

On June 14, 1987, at 9:50 p.m., Sergeant Robert Garzetta and Trooper Robert Dunning responded to a complaint of a subject menacing his neighbor with a r***e. Upon their arrival, the two Troopers engaged the individual in conversation. Then, without warning or provocation, the man raised his r***e and began firing at the two Division members. Trooper Dunning, age 45, was mortally wounded in the heart, while Sergeant Garzetta was wounded in the leg. Sergeant Garzetta returned fire, wounding the assailant three times. The assailant then turned his weapon on himself and committed su***de.
