TOWN OF ULSTER – Senior residents of The Birches of Chambers and Chambers Court this past weekend hosted area first responders as a “thank you” for their continued service.

"No matter how many times we sponsor an appreciation brunch, the excitement is always there and our gratitutde to these dedicated men and women never ceases,: said Bichez founder and managing partner Steve Aaron. "The professional and friendly manner in which they serve our senior residents gives us great comfort."

“Not only do I feel a sense of security and comfort, but so does my family, knowing that if something should happen that help is at hand within minutes,” said Mary Nielson, a resident at The Birches of Chambers since it opened in 2010. “I can live independently, but feel a sense of connectedness.”

Ulster County Legislator James Maloney presented Pride of Ulster awards to the first responders.

Honorees included members of the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office, Town of Ulster Police, Ulster Hose Fire Department #5 and Mobile Life Support Ambulance Service.

In addition to emergency call units, Birchez Associates has installed defibrillator stations at the properties and has provided staff training to assist until first responders arrive during emergencies.

Today we join in celebrating Our Flag, as we so often do. Last Saturday, during our Salute to First Responders, festivities started with two acknowledgements to Old Glory. First, residents and veterans Fred McIntosh and Richard Porter led the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance. Then Bailey middle school student Phillip Marshall sang The Star Spangled Banner. What a great way to get things going!

First Responders Take the Cake! Joined by our neighbors at The Birchez at Chambers we saluted local First Responders during an impressive brunch midday Saturday. Braving an unexpected deluge of rain and thunder, we filled two tents along with our honored guests. Fortunately the storm let up by the time our extensive array of food was served! We can't take credit for the sheet cake, here shown held by John Kelly of Ulster Hose Co. #5 surrounded by members of Ulster Hose and the Town of Ulster Police, but we did provide cookies, brownies and some other treats. Not sure how anyone found room for desert after all the main dishes!

Pride of Ulster County: Jim Maloney, Vice Chairman of the Ulster County Legislature, presented Pride of Ulster County awards at the Salute to First Responders on Saturday, June 11th, that we, the senior residents Chambers Court, hosted along with our neighbors at The Birches at Chambers. In this photo he is joined by 2nd Assistant Chief of Ulster Hose Co. 5, John Kelly. The honorees included the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office, Town of Ulster Police, Ulster Hose Company #5, and Mobile Life. Jim was followed by Alice Tipp, herself a thirty year veteran of the Legislature and now the Senior Advocate for Birchez Associates, who presented Certificates of Appreciation on behalf of the gathered residents. Reverend Shirley Whitlock, Community Outreach Coordinator for Birchez Associates, joined Alice in presenting the certificates to the honorees (in this case members of the Town of Ulster Police). And our own Mary Nielsen opened the festivities with a rousing welcome. Thanks to all who contributed and attended.

All Hands on Deck: Fortunately we had two large tents set up adjacent to our Community Center at 401 Chambers Drive when the rain hit earlier than expected for our Saturday celebration! The rain let up Saturday in time for the extensive buffet at the Salute to First Responders hosted by us and our neighbors, the senior residents of The Birchez at Chambers. First Responders and honored guests got first dibs on a wide array of dishes that we brought (40 feet of buffet - we had to set up two extra tables for all the food). And the sun was peeking though the clouds for the group shot which shows not only some of the First Responders who joined us, but in addition County Legislator Peter Loughran, Town of Ulster Board Member John Morrow, Community Outreach Coordinator Reverend Shirley Whitlock, Senior Advocate (and former Legislator) Alice Tipp, Vice Chairman of the Ulster County Legislature James Maloney, Judy Aaron, and Steve Aaron, Founder and Managing Director of Birchez Associates.

Bridging the Generation Gap: Phillip Marshall, a middle school student at Bailey School, Kingston, sang the “Star Spangled Banner” at the Salute to First Responders hosted by us the senior residents of Chambers Court and our neighbors at The Birchez at Chambers on Saturday, June 11, 2016. Phillip was joined by his younger brother William who provided commentary regarding our National Anthem. Many of our homes look out onto the grounds of Chambers Elementary School so the interaction between us and young people is often enhanced, whether just watching the kids play on the grounds of the school, in foster grandparent programs, in joint efforts at the school garden, or when the students come to our events to read stories. Shirley Whitlock, Community Outreach Coordinator for Birchez Associates, spoke for us in thanking Phillip and William for their joint performance. Shirley also pointed out that there are so many young people doing great deeds in our communities yet so few examples of their stories in the press and social media.

The Birches at Chambers and Chambers Court hosted Town of Ulster Police Officer David Kimble today April 14, 2016 for a Senior Safety Workshop.

Officer Kimble presented an interactive workshop explaining some of the numerous scams currently happening in the Town of Ulster including the recent IRS scam, the emergency scam, telephone scam, computer scam, identity theft and mail fraud. He left hand outs with the residents explaining the scams and who to call if someone was a victim.

The most common to senior citizens is the "emergency scam" in which a senior receives a phone call saying "Grandma/pa I've been in an accident down south. I need money to get out of trouble. Please don't call my parents. Just send money to:"

Officer Kimble ensured that every resident in attendance had the phone number for the Ulster Police Department and his name.

Officer Kimble recognized that the Birches communities are considered one of the safest properties. Plans are for Office Kimble to make these workshops a quarterly event.
