The Library will be CLOSED Labor Day Weekend. We will be closed Saturday, September 5th - Monday, September 7, reopening Tuesday September 8 at 10am.

If you have materials you want to return, you can use the blue drop box located outside our 55 Franklin Street location.

While the building may be closed, our digital services never do. You can still use your library card to access Libby, Hoopla, and Kanopy, as well as securing passes for museums.

Graphic Novel Book Club: My Favorite Thing is Monsters Saturday, September 12 • 3pm

We’re partnering with our friends at World’s End Comics for a new book club! Whether you’re a seasoned fan or new to the format, dive into the vibrant world of graphic novels – where stunning visuals meet compelling narratives.

In September we’ll be reading My Favorite Thing is Monsters by Emil Ferris

Set against the tumultuous political backdrop of late ’60s Chicago, My Favorite Thing Is Monsters is the fictional graphic diary of 10-year-old Karen Reyes, filled with B-movie horror and pulp monster magazines iconography. Karen Reyes tries to solve the murder of her enigmatic upstairs neighbor, Anka Silverberg, a holocaust survivor, while the interconnected stories of those around her unfold. When Karen’s investigation takes us back to Anka’s life in N**i Germany, the reader discovers how the personal, the political, the past, and the present converge.

Stranger Than Fiction: Limitless Energy of the Future? Thursday, September 10 • 6:30pm

A new monthly discussion group where we learn about strange and fascinating ideas in the world of science!

This month we’ll be reading about a breakthrough in the quest for nuclear fusion and the possibility of a nearly limitless source of low-carbon and low-radiation energy. In 2022, an indirect drive fusion implosion achieved a target gain of 1.5. This is the first laboratory demonstration of exceeding “scientific breakeven.” This achievement is the culmination of more than five decades of research and gives proof that laboratory fusion, based on fundamental physics principles, is possible.

Short List Book Club Wednesday, September 9 • 5:30pm

Exploring the best of the almost-best!

2026's Half Moon Rondout Cafe book club celebrates books that were shortlisted for prestigious literary prizes. While they didn’t take home the top honor, these titles more than earn their spot on your reading list with their exceptional writing and unforgettable stories.

This event will take place at Kingston Library 61 Crown Street. No registration required.

September’s book is New York Burning by Jill Lepore

In New York Burning, Bancroft Prize-winning historian Jill Lepore recounts these dramatic events of 1741, when ten fires blazed across Manhattan and panicked whites suspecting it to be the work a slave uprising went on a rampage. In the end, thirteen black men were burned at the stake, seventeen were hanged and more than one hundred black men and women were thrown into a dungeon beneath City Hall.

TEEN BOOK BOXES Last Day to Sign-Up is September 25

Are you one of the 90+ Teens who have gotten a Teen Book Box? If so, why not sign up again? If not, here's your chance to join the excitement of getting books chosen just for you based on your interests and books you've enjoyed in the past.

Stop by the library, fill out a sign-up sheet and our librarians will get started. Your box will be ready on the first day of the month that we're open. When you're done, return the books and the box, everything else inside is yours to keep!

One lucky box each month also contains a $15 gift certificate to World's End Comics! And the best part...it's absolutely FREE.

Applications are available in the library and will be accepted until all spots are filled.

More urgent than ever, this documentary spotlights librarians as harbingers of danger for Americans’ First Amendment rights. The story takes us behind the scenes of the Orwellian funding networks that strategically target children’s books nationwide, and the big-brother reasoning behind their focus on literary control.

Told as neutrally as possible, the film depicts contentious board meetings, bespoke interviews, and four years’ worth of investigative material edited with nostalgic clips.

So many of the problems of climate change require collective action, which can make it feel like there’s nothing one person can do.

The good news? There are tangible actions we can take, right in our own backyards.

Join us for a discussion of Nature’s Best Hope: A New Approach to Conservation That Starts in Your Yard by Douglas W. Tallamy, and learn how anyone can create a “Homegrown National Park,” even with just a balcony.

We’ll dig into practical, doable steps: planting native keystone species, reducing lawn space, cutting back on outdoor lighting, and skipping pesticides. These small shifts support the native insects, especially caterpillars, that birds and local ecosystems depend on. Tallamy’s core message: individual yards, added together, can reverse ecological decline.

Librarian Addie will share resources and firsthand experience starting a native garden right here in Kingston, proof that if you plant it, they will come.

Teen Study Skills Workshop Tuesday, September 1 • 6pm

Ever wish you could just get organized or stop procrastinating? Join us for a hands-on workshop where you will learn strategies for managing time, beating procrastination, and studying in ways that stick. Walk away with concrete resources and study plans to use during the school year!

About the Instructor: Sophia P. Harrison, M.Ed.

Sophia is an executive function and learning coach with a master's degree in education from Harvard. She helps students build the skills that school assumes but rarely teaches — organization, time management, self-regulation, and how to actually study.
