9/11 changed our country and the fire service in ways that will never be forgotten. On this 25th anniversary, we honor the victims, the first responders, and the strength of a nation that came together in the face of tragedy.

Debris in your lane? 🪨 Spot a sudden road hazard? ⚠️

In an emergency, braking and steering smoothly can help you maintain control. If your vehicle has ABS, press and hold the brake pedal firmly — don't pump the brakes — and use controlled steering if you need to avoid a hazard.

We are saddened to share the passing of Danny Cleek, a founding member of Sullivan West Volunteer Fire Department and a steady presence in our organization from the very beginning. Danny served in many roles throughout his time here and was serving as Chairman of the Board at the time of his passing.

The Cleek family name has been tied to Sullivan West for decades. His father served as chief, his brothers served in various capacities, and his son continues to serve with the department today. Their long-standing commitment has been a defining part of our history, and Danny’s contributions stand as a significant part of that legacy.

Danny passed away unexpectedly this week, leaving a void that will be felt for a long time. His influence is woven into the foundation of this department — visible in the work he helped build, the direction he helped shape, and the mark he left on all of us. He was well liked by everyone who knew him, and his memory will carry on far beyond his lifetime.

Danny will be greatly missed.

Rest easy, Danny. Thank you for everything you gave to Sullivan West.

Thanks to the State Fire Mashal's Office and our local representatives for helping support the Volunteer Firefighter and Equipment Training Grant. This year we were fortunate enough to receive funding to help purchase SCBA (airpack) bottles.

See a stopped emergency vehicle on the side of the road? 🚓🚒🚑

Do 3 things:
✔️ Slow down
✔️ Move over safely
✔️ Stay alert

*Some states have expanded laws to include all stopped vehicles.

With the expansion of Rural Service Patrol into Middle Tennessee, TDOT’s HELP network now serves all of Tennessee’s interstates. Whether you’re in a major metro area or traveling through a rural part of the state, assistance is just a call to 511 away.

HELP operators assist stranded motorists and help clear crash scenes more quickly, reducing congestion and improving safety for everyone on the road. That’s especially important in rural areas, where crashes often occur at higher speeds and can be more complex to manage.

Remember: Home fire escape planning and drills are an essential part of fire safety. A home fire escape plan needs to be developed and practiced before a fire strikes. Home fire escape planning should include the following:

-Drawing a map of each level of the home, showing all doors and windows.

-Going to each room and pointing to the two ways out.

-Making sure someone will help children, older adults, and people with disabilities wake up and get out.

-Teaching children how to escape on their own in case you cannot help them

-Establishing a meeting place outside and away from the home where everyone can meet after exiting.
