Today is World Habitat Day!

This year's theme is "Adequate Housing for All".

World Habitat Day highlights the importance of safe, affordable, and inclusive housing. Using native plants and managing invasive species can help make neighborhoods healthier and more sustainable. Native plants support wildlife and pollinators, protect biodiversity, and often need less water and maintenance. Managing invasive species helps protect these benefits by keeping harmful plants from taking over. By using native plants in neighborhoods, parks, and other spaces, communities can create healthier environments for both people and wildlife.

We have another Autumn Olive Work Day coming up! In case you missed our first event, you can still come help us improve the habitat at the Groveland Mine Ponds!
Through a project funded by Dickinson Area Community Foundation and Circle Power, we're working to improve the recreational habitat of the Groveland Recreation Area - and you can help! On Monday October 12th, from 9:00 am to 12pm, we will be removing invasive Autumn Olive from along trails and access roads.
Autumn Olive is a highly invasive shrub that dominates forest edge habitats and spreads quickly by producing a ton of seeds. While the berries may seem beneficial to wildlife, they offer little nutritional value as compared to our native berry-producing shrubs. Autumn Olive also has large thorns that make it difficult to navi

Today, Roots and Rivers worked with high schoolers from Kingsford to remove invasive Autumn Olive and Buckthorn from the trail at Bay College!
They did a great job, taking down big tree-sized plants, smaller plants, and everything in between!
The Bay College trail is an ongoing project, but as you walk it, you can see the progress being made.

Today is the first day of Firewood Month!
Firewood Month helps spread awareness that moving firewood long distances increases the risk of spreading invasive pests and diseases that can destroy natural areas.
Michigan is introducing a firewood quarantine starting January 1st 2027! With this new quarantine, all firewood entering Michigan must be certified heat-treated, and have an authorization certificate or label to prove it.

Welcome back to ! Today, we are comparing invasive Aquatic Forget-me-not and Spring Forget-me-not.
While they share part of their name, the Spring Forget-me-not likes dry and rocky soils, whereas the Aquatic one (as the name suggests) prefers moist soils.

It was a beautiful morning for a workday!
The Roots & Rivers crew met out at the Groveland Mine Ponds to continue our habitat improvement work.

Thanks to the Dickinson Area Community Foundation and Circle Power, we have been able to focus on improving the recreation site through trash clean up and invasive species removal. Most of our terrestrial invasive species work focuses on Autumn Olive, a highly invasive shrub disrupting ruffed grouse habitat and recreational access along the roads and trails throughout the recreational area.

If you're interested in learning more about this project or signing up for our October 12th habitat workday, check out our website at www.roots-rivers.org

The leaves are really starting to change color....at least on the native shrubs and trees!
Invasive shrubs, like the Autumn Olive lining this trail in the video, keep their green leaves later into the season than native plants do. This gives the invasive a competitive advantage as they can capitalize on a longer growing period, consuming resources and taking up more space.

Tomorrow starts Michigan's Trails Week! It's a week to celebrate and explore Michigan's many trails.

Public trails are important because they give everyone a chance to experience nature, come together as a community, and explore in new, exciting ways!
Horseback riding? Boating? Hiking? Whatever your fun, there's a trail for everyone!

As an organization, we help maintain trails in our community by surveying and treating invasives on and near them, hosting volunteer workdays, and educating the public about invasives, habitat conservation, and play. clean. go.

Another Wednesday, another !

Did you know there are approximately 30,000 different species of Orchids?
With that many different species, there are bound to be some that are invasive outside of their native region. One of those invasive Orchids for Michigan and Wisconsin is the Broad-leaved Helleborine. It spreads aggressively by thousands of seeds per plant, and ALSO by sprouting multiple stems from the same root system. This makes them hard to control!
