Burris Park Outdoor Education

Burris Park Outdoor Education The program is free for Kings County.

We are a cross-curricular learning excursion where scholars spend the day conducting hands-on investigations using local phenomena to develop a greater understanding of the environment and history of Kings county. The Burris Park Outdoor Education Program is a dynamic classroom focused on standards-based education in the core curricular areas of science, history, language arts, mathematics and fine arts while incorporating agriculture, conservation and park management.

🌿 Each year, more than 2,000 students from 7 HESD schools take part in hands-on learning at Burris Park! Students explore wildlife habitats, investigate nature as scientists, and connect with local history inside the museum, all while strengthening curiosity, teamwork, and environmental stewardship. We are proud to partner with HESD in providing opportunities for students to learn outdoors, build connections to places, and cultivate a love for the natural world.

🌱🐛 Expanded Learning Adventures with Burris Park Outdoor Education! 🐛🌱

This fall Expanded Learning students got their hands dirty learning about composting with WORMS! 🪱✨ They discovered how red wigglers turn food scraps into nutrient-rich soil that students will use in the spring for planting.

Hands-on learning like this helps students see the cycle of nature in action—from food waste ➡️ compost ➡️ healthy soil ➡️ thriving plants. 🌿🌻

We can’t wait to watch their spring garden grow with the help of our tiny composting partners. 🌱

Reach out if you would like to schedule a visit!

🌳✨ Burris Park Wildlife Meadow Expansion is Complete! ✨🌳

Thanks to a $250,000 grant through the Nature-Based Climate Solutions initiative, funded by the California Conservation Corps, Kings County—alongside the Kings County Office of Education and Community Services Employment Training (CSET)—has transformed Burris Park into an even richer hub for outdoor education. 🌿

🌱 What’s New:
✅ 150 new trees planted throughout the park
✅ Nearly 1 acre of wildlife meadow expanded for student learning near the river
✅ Freshly renovated pathways with decomposed granite + a new trail to the meadow
✅ 30 new garden beds + orchard trees highlighting local agriculture
✅ Upgraded irrigation to support healthy, thriving landscapes
✅ Educational signage added along walking paths

These eco-friendly upgrades mean students now have hands-on opportunities to explore biodiversity, climate change, and the importance of protecting nature—all right here in Kings County. 🐝🌻

We’re excited to see the next generation of environmental stewards learning and growing in the expanded Wildlife Meadow! 💚

Thank you to AgWest for the donation of $35,000 to help construct a shade structure at Burris Park!

The Burris Park Foundation worked with Kings County Public Works to design a custom sail shade, which now provides protective covering during the hot summer season for thousands of students. Over 15,000 students will be seen for the 2024-25 school year and the shade structure will be appreciated by all of them!
