📜 On this day 248 years ago President of the Massachusetts Provincial Congress (similar to governor today) James Warren wrote to John Adams on June 7, 1778.

“With regard to domestic News, I am Informed by my Friends at Congress that our Army is very respectable both with regard to Numbers and discipline. The Baron d Stubun has performed wonders in regulateing the discipline of the Army. They are well Cloathed, and well provided with Provisions, Arms, and Ammunition, and Congress have determined that the Officers who serve to the End of the war shall receive half pay for 7 Years, and the Soldiers have 80 dollars, which has given satisfaction to the first, and Contentment to the last, and prevented both resignations, and desertions but no operations of Consequence have yet taken place.”

“I have lately recd 1900 Stand of Arms from the Eastward, which will nearly, if not quite, compleat the number of Men who are at present in want—But we are exceedingly distressed for Cartouch Boxes. By an exact return made a few days ago 1700 were wanting for the new Recruits, and to replace the old ones worn out in the last Campaign. Since this a number of Recruits from N. 📜 On this day 248 years ago Surgeon and Chaplain David Griffith wrote to Lieutenant Colonel Leven Powell on June 3, 1778.

“The Army is just where it was when you left it, but very differently circumstanced; things seem much mended for the better. Everything wears the appearance of neatness and order; the men are very well clothed, but not quite all armed. We have plenty of provisions and forage. The Hospitals are well supplied and neatly kept; You hear of no complaints now from that or any other Department. The strictest attention is paid to discipline since the appointment of the new Inspector-General, the Baron Steuben (a Prussian), and I think the whole army is much improved in that particular.”
