Mining and Quarrying | Marble
For over a century, Upper Merion Township served as a vital industrial center where local quarries extracted the famous "King of Prussia marble," a distinctive blue stone featured in iconic 19th-century landmarks like Philadelphia’s Girard College and the U.S. Capitol. This prosperous mining era, centered around the village of King of Prussia, provided the "Pennsylvania Blue" marble and limestone that fueled regional growth and built some of America’s most significant Greek Revival structures.
is an Upper Merion initiative celebrating America 250 – the nationwide commemoration of the United States’ 250th anniversary - through the lens of the Township. Every Tuesday, we’ll spotlight a place, event, or person of historical significance to our community. From Revolutionary War connections to local legends and landmarks, each post will share a unique story that helped shape Upper Merion.
