Some dogs need a home for a lifetime. Mercy just needed one for a night. 🤍

We only got to love Mercy for a few short weeks. But somehow, that old girl with the powdered sugar face and endless little circles made herself a part of us.

Her story began with a call about a found dog.

Mercy was at the bottom of a five-foot oil pit.

Covered in old grease, painfully thin, weak and alone. We'll always wonder about the life she lived before us. Who loved her. How she ended up down there.

Mercy became our front desk girl. She spent her days making laps around us, always turning left. When she refused to eat, we cooked for her, warmed it up, and served it on a paper plate.

We learned her routines. We got used to the sound of her little feet circling behind us.

We loved her.

But Mercy began to decline. We couldn't fix everything that was wrong with her, but we could make sure the shelter wasn't the last place she ever called home.

So Mercy went home with our Programs Coordinator for one night.

She had a girls' night. A couch. Soft blankets. A steak quesadilla and ice cream. She snored like a narcoleptic trucker and wandered around making her familiar left turns.

Until she didn't.

For the first time since we'd known her, Mercy stopped pacing.

She curled up between the people who loved her, cuddled, and slept.

She was home.

The next morning brought a breakfast sandwich and one last day with her people. And when it was time, Mercy left this world wrapped in blankets and surrounded by all the love we had.

We couldn't change the beginning of Mercy's story. But we could change the ending.

For one night, she got to be somebody's dog. And when her time came, she knew she wasn't alone.

There will be another Mercy.

Another animal who doesn't need forever. Maybe they just need enough time to know what home feels like before they go.

Hospice fostering will break your heart. But when the next Mercy finds their way through our doors, we hope her story is the reason someone opens their home and says yes anyway.

Rest easy, Mercy.

No more circles, sweet girl. You can finally rest. 🤍

👁️Goggles got out. Who's next?

Our infamous one-eyed wonder, Goggles, officially left the building this week. 🥹

She found her family, packed her imaginary belongings, and clocked OUT of shelter life for good.

And while we could not be happier for her, Goggles did leave behind a shelter full of coworkers who would also like to resign immediately.

So… who’s following her out the door today?

We have dogs and cats who are very ready to trade kennel floors for couches, car rides, snacks, and somebody who lets them take up an unreasonable amount of space in the bed.

Not ready to adopt? FOSTER. Take somebody home for a little while and give us an open kennel. We will happily provide the pet. You provide the couch.

And thanks to Friends of King William Animal Shelter, adoption fees are sponsored through the end of September, AND we’re waiving our $20 adoption fee. In other words:

✨ THE PETS ARE FREEEEEE. ✨

Come see us TODAY from 11 AM–2 PM and help us make this a very bad weekend for our kennel occupancy numbers.

Goggles started the trend. Everybody else needs to follow suit.

🐾 Ready to find your own Goggles? Full disclosure: everyone we have left does come with the complete factory-installed eye package. Goggles was a limited edition.

🍝 🧆 It's Foster Friday, and we're here to give you the Meatball Report!

We sent Meatball to foster care for important scientific research, and the results are in... he has determined that personal space is unnecessary.

Meatball has quickly perfected the art of being wherever you are. Preferably touching you. Ideally in your lap. Despite being built less like a lap dog and more like an ottoman.

He’s also been a suspiciously perfect houseguest. No accidents, learned to sit, loves the kids, loves the dogs, loves a good chew bone. Frankly, we were starting to wonder where the catch was.

Then he hit us with the BAROOOOOOOOOO.

Meatball does not simply howl. He throws his entire head back with such commitment that we’re pretty sure his neck briefly disconnects from the rest of the Meatball.

📣 BAROOOOOOOO
Translation: I have several thoughts and also where did you go.

So there you have it. Meatball is a snuggly, dog-loving, kid-loving, house trained hunk who will follow you to the ends of the earth and provide the soundtrack.

Since Meatball is living it up in foster care, reach out to us to set up a meet & greet with this large, handsome meat orb. 🥩❤️

Please observe Uncle Grandpa.

Uncle Grandpa is thick. He is pudgy. His legs are suspiciously little. He has an underbite that refuses to be ignored, and sometimes his lips get stuck on his teefs.

Does he fix it? No. ❤️

Uncle Grandpa can take a little time to warm up to new people. He is not going to immediately throw himself into the arms of a stranger like some kind of hooligan. He has standards.

But earn his trust and you unlock the full Uncle Grandpa experience:
🍗 Treat enthusiast
🧸 Toy enjoyer
😘 Face kiss recipient
🦷 Teefs occasionally outside of containment
🥔 Built like somebody put a normal dog in the dryer

We cannot stress enough how delightful his proportions are. Big ol’ body. Little legs. Smudgy face. Underbite. The engineering is questionable. The finished product is exceptional.

And eventually, someone is going to look at this ridiculous little man and realize:
“Unfortunately, that is my son.”

Come meet Uncle Grandpa. Give him a minute. Bring snacks. Do not ask how he became both an uncle AND a grandpa at his age. The family has been through enough.

And thanks to Friends of King William Animal Shelter, adoption costs are covered through the end of September! Friends is sponsoring the cost of adoption, and we’re waiving our regular $20 adoption fee. ❤️

09/09/2026

Around here, carrying a 50 pound dog on your hip isn’t a workout. It’s a lifestyle. 💅🐶

Shelter girls? Obviously.

Dogs on our hips? Mandatory.

Deputy Hescox? He showed up in uniform and still got drafted into the sisterhood. Shelter girl. No appeals. No exceptions. 🤠

And these fine country critters are ready to be scooped up, hauled around, and treated like the oversized babies they absolutely believe they are.

Through the end of September, Friends of King William Animal Shelter is covering the cost of adoption AND we’re waiving our $20 adoption fee.

So pick your favorite dog, prepare your hip for duty, and come give that good ol’ boy or girl a ride home for FREE.

🧺 Welcome back to this week's episode of: PLEASE TAKE OUR LAUNDRY 🧺

A full animal shelter and a broken laundry room walk into a bar.

Just kidding. We can’t go to the bar! We have too much laundry!

Our brand new, superhero-level laundry room is still in the works, which means we are STILL without our normal washing capacity.

And here’s a fun little shelter logistics problem: Where does a shelter with very little storage space put mountains of dirty laundry?

✨ IN EMPTY KENNELS. ✨

You know. The kennels we've been saying are FULL of adoptable pets.

So until our beautiful new laundry machines arrive to save the day, we’re making this a WEEKLY CALL FOR LAUNDRY HEROES. 🦸‍♀️🧺

Every week, we have bags of dirty towels, blankets, and bedding that we would LOVE to send home with anyone willing to wash, dry, fold-ish, and bring them back.

Take one bag. Take five. Take enough to make your washing machine question its career choices. Every single load helps.

☎️ PRO TIP: Give us a call before heading over to make sure we have laundry ready to go!

Usually when we make one of these posts, you wonderful people descend upon us and our laundry mountain disappears FAST. Which is AMAZING. But the animals are extremely committed to making more.

So if you call and we’re temporarily out of dirty laundry, don’t worry. Give us a day. 😂

That’s why we need laundry helpers week after week, not just during the initial post-posting laundry frenzy.

And yes, we will definitely be back next week asking again.

Until the new machines are installed, laundry is now our collective personality. 🧺🐾

😛 Tongue out Tuesday, courtesy of the KWRAS crew! 🐾

Some are smiling. Some are panting. Some simply forgot to put their tongues back where they belong.

Either way, they’d all look significantly better doing this from your couch. 👀

And while we have you here... just a tiny little piece of information that may or may not be relevant to your interests:

Thanks to our incredible Friends of King William Animal Shelter, sponsoring adoption costs, and we’re waiving the remaining $20 fee and sending pets home for FREE! ❤️

That’s all. No pressure. Just a bunch of tongues and some completely free-to-adopt best friends waiting for you. 😌

Come meet the crew!

Barnacle Boy is looking for someone who needs a copilot. 💙

Not just someone with a couch. Someone with a passenger seat, a leash by the door, and room in their plans for one VERY enthusiastic goofy dude.

Barnacle Boy is the kind of dog who wakes up ready to participate. Road trip? He’s in. Hike? Absolutely. Dog friends? YES. Lazy afternoon afterward? Scoot over.

He’s lived with dogs AND cats, rides great in the car, knows his commands, loves everyone, thinks kids are pretty great too, and has one of those personalities that makes absolutely everything seem like the BEST. DAY. EVER.

Seriously, look at that face. The man is DELIGHTED to be alive. 😂

And somehow, this ridiculously lovable adventure buddy is still looking for his person.

So we’re making this VERY easy:
Barnacle Boy will be at the shelter TODAY from 11–2.
And he is completely FREE to adopt, thanks to Friends of King William Animal Shelter!

Come meet him. Take him for a walk. Fall in love with the giant smile.

Somebody needs a Barnacle Boy riding sh***un. We’re pretty convinced it’s one of you. 💙
