Snow fell softly today at the King William County Museum inside the Old Courthouse a quiet moment in a building that has witnessed centuries of Virginia history.

This courthouse is the oldest still in use courthouse in the United States standing through revolutions wars winters and everyday life in King William County. Days like today are a reminder that history is not just something we study it is something we continue to live inside.

If you love local history living landmarks and moments where the past and present meet give us a like and follow to stay connected.

The First Symbol of Unity

On January 2, 1776, George Washington ordered a new flag raised โ€“ the British Union Flag with the additional of 13 stripes representing the colonies.

For the first time, there was a shared symbol of unity.
The British mistook it for surrender. It wasnโ€™t.

In January 1776, Virginia and the colonies were defining what they stood for โ€“ and how the world would see them.
