The commissioner of the revenue's, treasurer's and registrar's offices will be closed on Friday, Sept. 4, beginning at noon. Administration for the sheriff's office will be closed on Friday, Sept. 4, beginning at 3:30 p.m.

All county offices will be closed on Monday, Sept. 7, in observance of Labor Day.

Both the Sealston and Purkins Corner Convenience Centers will also be closed on Sept. 7.

All offices and convenience centers will open with regular hours on Tuesday, Sept. 8.

As we wrap up our series highlighting the honorees from the August 19, 2026 First Responders Appreciation Breakfast, we are proud to recognize a true lifetime of service.

A Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Sheriff Christopher Giles of the King George Sheriff’s Office.

After 36 years of dedicated public service, including 34 years with the King George Sheriff’s Office and prior service in the United States Marine Corps, Sheriff Giles has made a lasting impact on our community.

Throughout his career, he has led with integrity, commitment, and genuine dedication to the people of King George. As Sheriff, he worked to strengthen the connection between law enforcement and the community while supporting and mentoring the deputies and leaders who served alongside him.

His greatest legacy is not simply the years he served, but the people he encouraged, the relationships he built, and the stronger organization he leaves behind.

As Sheriff Giles retires, King George County thanks him for a lifetime of service and leadership. His dedication has made a difference in countless lives and will continue to be felt throughout our community for years to come.

Congratulations, Sheriff Giles, and thank you for 36 years of service to our community!

On August 19, 2026, at the Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce Annual First Responders Appreciation Breakfast, the Firefighter/EMS Distinction – Lifesaving Team Excellence Award was presented to Battalion Chief Dan Dixon, Battalion Chief Chris Smith, Captain Matthew Russell, Lieutenant Triston Beverly, Master Technician Elliot Ganson, DPO Geoffrey Knight, Firefighter Charles Bullock, Firefighter Haley Zappos, and Firefighter Marley Ramirez-Tuthill of King George County Fire and Rescue and the Fredericksburg Fire Department.

Following a serious crash involving a motorcycle and a pickup truck on July 25, 2026, this team worked together to quickly secure the scene and provide critical medical care to a severely injured patient. Through their training, teamwork, and dedication, they were able to stabilize the patient and safely transport him to a trauma center, where he continues to recover

On August 19, 2026, at the First Responders Appreciation Breakfast, the Unit Award – Team Valor in Critical Operations was presented to Lieutenant Harold Myers, Medic Valerie Myers, Fire & Rescue Technician Brian Seay, and Deputy Kelli Houlihan of King George Fire & Rescue and the King George Sheriff’s Office.

What began as a routine medical call quickly became a challenging and deeply personal situation. The team encountered a woman facing extremely difficult circumstances who was hesitant to accept medical care. Rather than simply walking away, they spent more than an hour patiently talking with her, listening to her concerns, and building a relationship of trust.

Their compassion, patience, and persistence ultimately helped her agree to receive the care she needed. The team then worked carefully and respectfully to safely remove her from the home and transport her to the hospital.

Although her story sadly came to an end later that year, this team made a lasting difference. Through their dedication and compassion, they ensured that her final days were spent receiving the care she needed and surrounded by people who treated her with dignity, respect, and kindness.

On Wednesday, August 19, 2026, at the First Responders Appreciation Breakfast, 911 Communications Director Jamal Harvey was presented with the Lifeline Award for Emergency Communications.

Since joining the King George Sheriff’s Office in 2011, Jamal has been a dedicated telecommunicator, trainer, problem solver, and leader. His experience as both a communications professional and certified paramedic gives him a unique understanding of the vital role dispatchers play in every emergency.

Since becoming Communications Director in 2025, Jamal has helped strengthen the division through updated procedures, improvements to the county’s dispatch system, and a major redesign of Fire and Rescue box assignments—helping make emergency response more coordinated and efficient.

On Wednesday, August 19, 2026, the Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with local businesses, honored first responders from across the region at the First Responders Appreciation Breakfast at the Fredericksburg Convention Center.

King George County’s Sheriff’s Office and Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services Department were recognized with awards for their dedication and service to the community.

Over the coming days, we’ll be spotlighting each award and recognizing the individuals and teams who were honored for their outstanding service.

The Civilian Lifesaving Award was presented to Kohen Brawner for his incredible bravery during an apartment fire on July 23, 2025. At just 14 years old, Kohen escaped the burning apartment, only to learn that his 10-year-old sister was still inside. Without hesitation, he returned to the smoke-filled home, found his sister, and helped her safely to the outside. Kohen’s quick thinking, selflessness, and love for his family played a critical role in saving a life.

On Tuesday, the King George Board of Supervisors proudly recognized Patti Norris Barker for 32 years of outstanding service to the service authority and the King George community.

Throughout her career as Executive Assistant, Patti provided invaluable support to leadership, staff, the Board of Directors, and the thousands of customers served by the authority. Her professionalism, reliability, and extensive institutional knowledge helped provide continuity through decades of growth, change, and leadership transitions.

We are incredibly grateful for Patti’s dedication, loyalty, and commitment to public service. Her contributions have left a lasting mark on the King George County Service Authority and the community it serves.
