School is back in session, King City. The King City Police Department was there on this drizzly morning to help with traffic and to send kids off for a great first day.

But we can do better.

A few things we noticed this morning:

1. We all need to slow down. During school hours (when the sign flashes bright yellow), the speed limit is 20 MPH. We should not see drivers going 30+ MPH, especially not over 60% of you.

2. We need to put the phones (and papers) down and focus on driving. Distracted driving is already hazardous (and illegal), but it’s especially dangerous for kids who are walking, biking, and learning their new schedules. Please put away the distractions and focus on your surroundings.

KCPD will conduct regular patrols and enforce traffic safety measures to create a safer environment for kids to get to school, but we can all work together to ensure they get there safely.

It's that time of year again, folks. The King City Police Department would like to remind everyone of a few safety tips and upcoming traffic changes to keep kids safe as the new school year begins:

📆 Be Aware of Changing Schedules: A new school year brings buses and more cars to neighborhoods during drop-off and pick-up times. Give yourself ample time to adjust to traffic changes in your area by leaving earlier and exercising patience, especially during the first few weeks of class.

📣 Specifically for Deer Creek Elementary, drop-off will occur from 7:15 AM - 8:15 AM, and pick-up from 2 PM - 2:45 PM. Please note that this is when traffic will be heaviest in that area and when more kids will be visible on and near roadways.

📣 Additionally, please be aware of the new turn lane into Deer Creek Elementary from 131st Avenue. Please exercise patience as drivers navigate this change.

👀 Be Aware of Your Surroundings: There will be many new faces trying to navigate crosswalks and sidewalks. Please drive at the speed limit in school zones and minimize distractions while driving.

🌧 Be Aware of Changing Weather and the End of Daylight Saving Time: September also marks the end of summer, bringing cloudy skies and rain, along with the end of Daylight Saving Time in November. As a result, it will get darker earlier. Make sure your headlights and taillights are functioning properly and that you've replaced any old windshield wipers to improve visibility.

Attention: We responded to a high-priority animal call involving a dog left in a hot car. Leaving pets in vehicles, even for a short time, can be deadly. Do not leave your pets in the car under any circumstances.

Car interiors can heat up by more than 20°F in just minutes, quickly causing heatstroke and death—even with windows cracked, being parked in the shade, or leaving water for your pet. On an 85°F day, interior temperatures can exceed 100°F within 10 minutes and reach 120°F within 30 minutes. We love animals just as much as you do; please do not leave your pets in the car.

Happy Fourth of July, King City! We wish you a safe and happy Independence Day as we celebrate our nation's freedom together.

The King City Police Department would like to remind everyone of when it is and isn't appropriate to call 9-1-1 during the Fourth of July.

-When to call 9-1-1:
-If someone is seriously injured
-If something is on fire, you can see flames or smell smoke
-There is an immediate danger to life or property

When NOT to call 9-1-1 - INSTEAD, to call non-emergency dispatch at (503) 629-0111:
-Someone is using fireworks
-You hear fireworks nearby or any other noise-related complaints

Our dispatchers will be working as quickly as they can to address non-emergency complaints between emergency calls.

We also acknowledge that Fourth of July fireworks can trigger PTSD symptoms like exaggerated startle responses, anxiety, and panic due to unexpected loud noises and bright flashes. Crisis and Support Hotlines are available for immediate, free, and confidential support if trauma reminders become overwhelming:

Well, it's not everyday that you get hot air balloons landing in your backyard... Or, well, golf course.

The balloons are part of Tigard's Festival of Balloons this weekend. This one had to make a quick stop on hole 8 today due to some issues with lack of wind, but we're glad to say that everyone made it out safely and now have a very fun story to tell at parties.

While you're packing, make sure to stop by the City of King City, Oregon City Hall to fill out our very useful Residential Security Check Request. This lets our officers know to conduct extra patrols around your home while you're away and to monitor for any suspicious activity.
