The “Ordinary” bicycle—better known today as the penny-farthing—was one of the earliest bicycles, popular in the late 1800s. Its giant front wheel helped riders travel faster on rough roads, while the smaller rear wheel provided balance. Though it looked unusual, the Ordinary was a symbol of innovation and adventure during the early days of transportation—and we’re proud to have one right here at the Monterey County Agricultural & Rural Life Museum!
