Join the National Association of Local Boards of Health in strengthening public health leadership at the local level. Our conference is focused on equipping boards of health with the knowledge, tools, and confidence needed to lead effectively.

Boards of health play a vital role in protecting and improving community health. This conference is designed to inspire and support both current and future board members by providing practical governance strategies, leadership development, and real-world examples that strengthen board effectiveness.

Register by August 6th to take advantage of the early bird rate. Join board of health members, health officers and other public health professionals by learning from others and interacting to develop partnerships and share solutions affecting our state and local communities across the country.

The National Association of Local Boards of Health (NALBOH) is currently recruiting candidates to serve on the board of directors, with terms beginning after each year's annual meeting. All members in good standing are eligible to serve on the board.

Our goal is to prepare a slate of candidates that are representative of our membership and diverse in experience and background. Board members will meet 5-6 times per year including 2 in-person meetings. Board members are expected to participate in all board meetings, attend the annual conference and participate in other activities to help advance the association’s strategic priorities.

Application Process
Interested candidates are encouraged to apply by July 31, 2026. The application is available online and requires a statement of interest, letter of reference and candidate information. A final slate of candidates will be presented to the membership for vote approximately 30 days prior to the annual meeting (October 13th).

Part 2 of a Multi-Week Series for Boards of Health!

In a moment when trust in institutions is declining, we must be as strategic with our communications as we are with our advocacy, organizing, research, and practice.

This session presents new research from the FrameWorks Institute on:

how Americans think about trust, especially when it comes to health institutions and information;
levels of trust in health messengers and institutions; and
framing strategies that can build, restore, or undermine trust.
About the Speaker: Dr. Julie Sweetland is a sociolinguist and senior advisor with the FrameWorks Institute, a nonprofit that studies the cultural and communications aspects of social and scientific issues. Dr. Sweetland’s skill in translating framing research into communication strategy has helped advocates, policymakers, and scientists drive change on health equity topics like childhood adversity, to***co control, maternal mortality, and more. As a longtime partner to the American Academy of Pediatrics, Julie has been instrumental in AAP’s efforts to lead a more productive public conversation on childhood vaccination.

Our 5th annual 2026 Virtual Governance Symposium Registration is now Open! We're offering 4 Weeks of Training: Live Sessions and Recordings Available in May-June 2026!

Are you or your board of health colleagues looking to get more engaged as a board member? Board of health members are needed as supporters and advocates for public health and their health departments. The National Association of Local Boards of Health (NALBOH) is offering the 5th annual symposium to provide education and resources, along with networking and sharing experiences amongst other board members and public health partners. Sessions will focus on the six governance functions, with emphasis on board of health resources, examples and more. Learn from and interact with board of health members, public health advocates, and leaders from across the country.

This series targets individuals interested in serving on public health boards or advisory committees looking to strengthen their governance and advocacy skills. Participants range from new board members to experienced leaders seeking advanced development opportunities. Attendees will gain essential skills to excel in their governance roles and support the success of their local boards.
