For EMS Week 2026, we want to recognize Flight Paramedic Tawyla Diserens whose strength, compassion, and faith continue to inspire those around her.

Tawyla has served in EMS for 20 years and has flown with Air Evac for the last 12 years. Returning to flight medicine after the tragic loss of her daughter, Romi, in a wreck has not been easy. But Romi was always proud of the work her mom did, and that love and encouragement continue to carry her forward every day.

Over the last year, Tawyla’s life has changed deeply, but through grief and trauma she has leaned fully into her faith, placing God at the center of everything she does. She prays for her patients, loves them well, and approaches every call with a deeper compassion and understanding for people who are hurting.

She is also incredibly thankful for her husband, Gaige, who has been her rock through it all, and for her son Parker, whom she loves immensely.

We are grateful for providers like Tawyla who answer the call to serve others even while walking through their own pain. Her faith, resilience, and heart for patients remind us what EMS is truly about.

Thank you for continuing to serve, love, and care for others so faithfully. Happy EMS Week, Tawyla!

EMS Week Spotlight on Base Line Pilot Chris Bell! Here’s Chris’s story…

“I was born and raised in Texas, just south of Killeen in Georgetown. After graduating I joined the Navy and spent three years overseas in Japan on an aircraft carrier, cruising around that part of the world. Once I had had enough of boat life I mustered out and joined the Army. I spent the first half of my career as enlisted, and when I went for my school of NCO I was introduced to a Blackhawk helicopter. I knew right then that’s what I wanted to do with the rest of my career so that’s what I did. As soon a I finished flight school I was shipped overseas for my first tour of Operation Iraqi Freedom, which was followed by two more trips to Iraq and one to Afghanistan.
I retired from the Army in April of 2011 after 21 years of service and tried to enjoy the quiet, but soon got stir crazy and had to get a job. I was recommended by one of my friends who was already a pilot working with Air Evac and hired on in May of 2011 and went out to Louisiana to open AEL 100 in the town of Rayville, just East of Mobile. After six months out there, a spot opened up in Texas and jumped over to Mineral Wells where I would stay for 14 years. I was blessed once again in 2025 when a spot opened in Killeen, close to home, and this is where I plan to spend the rest of my career. I’ll stop flying when I’m forced to because it’s just too much fun. I get great satisfaction doing a job I love and helping people each and every day and working with my wonderful crew.
When I’m not working I spend my time with my wife on our 14-acre farm. I love riding my motorcycle, working on my old truck, and taking care of our animals which include two dogs, two cats, and more chickens and ducks than are reasonable.”

Happy EMS Week, Chris!

EMS Week Spotlight on Flight Paramedic Bryan Keen!

Bryan says, "I was exposed to EMS as a volunteer firefighter and put on the ambulance as an extra set of hands for what sounded like a difficult call. I had no clue what I was doing!" He said this was the day that he decided he wanted to make a difference.

Bryan started working in EMS as a paramedic in the local area and also worked as a law enforcement officer. He began working as a flight paramedic in Killeen when the base first opened 24 years ago!

Bryan says he still enjoys the job and loves the people he works with. He says, "they make me want to be the best that I can be when I am in the aircraft."

When Bryan isn't on duty, he enjoys serving the community as a funeral service assistant. He also enjoys the beach and cruising with his wife, Kelley.

Thank you for your service, Bryan. Happy EMS Week!

EMS Week Spotlight on Flight Paramedic Shelli Miller!

Shelli says she wanted to be a paramedic since childhood and was inspired by the TV shows Emergency! and M*A*S*H. She says she wanted to be able to help someone and make a real difference for them.

Shelli became a Licensed Vocational Nurse in 1993 but never gave up her dream to get into EMS. She became an EMT in 1998, a medic in 1999, and got her TCFP commission in 2000. She worked as a firefighter/paramedic for municipal departments, and a paramedic for private and hospital-based services. She obtained an Associates in Applied Sciences from TSTC. In January of 2023, she began her flight career with us at Air Evac 66.

Shelli says, "I love the dedication to clinical excellence that it takes to become a successful flight paramedic. I love the challenge of learning, and growing in my career, and despite my many years of experience, I look forward to learning something every shift."

In her time off, Shelli spends time with her three kids, her husband Jim, and six grandchildren. She also enjoys riding and competing on her horses.

Happy EMS Week, Shelli!
