In honor of the end of Hawaiʻi Invasive Species Awareness Month, we are wrapping up by discussing another plant: the Christmas berry (Schinus terebinthifolia).

Don’t let the name fool you—this invasive species doesn’t bring holly or joy! Instead, it produces fast spreading, dense shrubs that take over native plants. The shrub can grow more than 20 feet tall and has green leaves that grow opposite each other. Its bright red berries form in clusters and fruit in the winter. If you are removing it, be sure to wear gloves, as it is related to poison ivy and can cause skin irritation.

Our team works hard to control this invasive plant, but community support makes all the difference. Join us for our monthly W**d N Watch event every third Thursday to help protect the refuge. DM us if you’re interested in attending this event or learning about additional volunteer opportunities.

This month, we’re drawing attention to invasive species—starting with morning glory, a fast growing vine that threatens native vegetation and the birds that depend on it. The vine spreads quickly, weaving through native plants and creating tangled hazards where birds can become trapped and unable to survive.
Our team works hard to control this invasive plant, but community support makes all the difference. Join us for our monthly W**d N Watch event every third Thursday to help protect the refuge. DM us if you’re interested in attending this event or learning about additional volunteer opportunities.

May is Hawaiʻi Invasive Species Awareness Month!

It’s the perfect time to highlight how collective action helps protect our ecosystems and communities from harmful invasive species. From fast‑spreading weeds to invasive animals and insects, these species can outcompete native plants and disrupt important habitats across the island.

Here’s how you can help:
• Clean your equipment and gear before and after outdoor activities.
• Learn local guidelines and get familiar with common invasive species.
• Get involved! Join us for our monthly W**d‑N‑Watch events on every third Thursday of the month.

🌿 Happy Endangered Species Day! 🌿

Here on Kauaʻi, we’re proud to care for three National Wildlife Refuges—Kīlauea Point, Hanalei, and Hulē‘ia. These protected areas provide critical habitat for some of Hawaiʻi’s most endangered native species, from seabirds soaring along our cliffs to waterbirds nesting in our lush wetlands.

Mahalo for helping us keep these special places thriving for generations to come!

🌺 Happy Mother’s Day! 🌺

Let's celebrate all moms out there—birth moms, adoptive moms, step moms, aunties, tutu, caregivers, mentors, and anyone who shows love in that special “mom” way.

Just like our koaʻe ʻula (red-tailed tropicbirds), who team up to raise their single chick with tons of dedication, we celebrate all the people who nurture, guide, and lift others.

Mahalo for your kindness, your strength, and all the small moments that make a big difference.
