Our Princeville Moʻolelo free lecture series will continue Tuesday, June 16th as we welcome Mike Coots! From surviving a harrowing shark attack to becoming one of Earth’s staunchest advocates for sharks, Mike’s journey is a testament to the indomitable human spirit and the power of turning tragedy into triumph. Join us as he shares his story and his amazing photographs - and inspires us to rethink our relationship with these apex predators of the sea.

Our free talk story event will be held on Tuesday, 6/16/26, from 5:00 to 6:00pm in the Princeville Community Center. For more information, visit www.kauairefuges.org/princeville-moolelo.

Our team had a wonderful time at two World Ocean Day events this past weekend. On Saturday, Kīlauea Point NWR hosted an event, which also featured a blessing by Kumu Kēhau and members of her hālau for the “Ka Pae ʻĀina O Hawaiʻi Nei” Hawaiian Archipelago mosaic mural that was recently installed at the Refuge. Come check it out!

On Sunday, we participated in the 3rd Annual Kauaʻi World Ocean Day Festival & Cleanup presented by Hoʻomalu Ke Kai. It is always a pleasure talking story with the community and inspiring young people through our two wildlife games!

Koa'e 'ula surveys continue at Kīlauea Point National Wildlife Refuge! ❤️

As of mid-May, our biologists are monitoring 164 nests across the refuge. The majority of these nests are within the 168-acre predator exclusion fence, but there are several pairs of Koa'e 'ula (Red-tailed tropicbirds) nesting near the lighthouse, where refuge staff undertake extensive predator control activities to protect nesting seabirds.

The average incubation period for Koa'e 'ula is about 44 days. After hatching, chicks will remain in or near the nest for approximately 82 days before fledging. Our team visits each nest monthly, allowing them to monitor chick development throughout the season and document nest outcomes.
