Darren Horan - Monroe County School Board Dist. 1

Darren Horan - Monroe County School Board Dist. 1 Monroe County School Board Member - District 1 Keys born. Keys raised. Keys invested. He will dedicate his time on the School Board to do just that.

Darren was raised in the Florida Keys and attended public school, first starting at Sigsbee School and eventually graduating from Key West High School in 1997. Darren is a partner at Horan Law, LLP and co-owns several restaurants and a catering company. His wife, Jessica, is also a graduate of Key West High School and they have three (3) daughters: a 9-year-old at Poinciana Elementary, a 4-year-old in pre-kindergarten and a 20-year-old who graduated from Key West High School in 2020 and now attends Georgia Tech in Atlanta. Darren made his decision to run for School Board because he believes that in order for children to succeed in the classroom, negative outside interferences should be kept as minimal as possible. Darren's community service work includes: Take Stock in Children (Mentor); Board of Directors for the Greater Key West Chamber of Commerce; Chairman of the Key West Military Affairs Committee; Vice-President of the Southernmost Seminoles Club; Coach (youth sports).

A big “Thank You” to Tim Urbanski (Utility Board Seat D) for reaching out to support the Monroe County Lunch Program with unused campaign funds. We are heading in the right direction and the momentum is building.

Someone asked me when I first started this idea if I had any “short term” solutions to fixing the lunch issue, and the only answer I could think of was “if someone else would’ve thought of this 10 years ago - we wouldn’t be having this conversation.”

Sometimes there are no quick fixes and the only corrective measure is through long, steady progression towards the goal. If this takes 10 years to correct - then so be it. Maybe our kids will not benefit, but our grandkids might. And that, alone, is worth the effort.

Again- thank you all for your generosity!

A special “thank you” goes out to Juan Llera, Greg Sullivan, Dee Dee Henriquez, Chris Massicotte, Kevin McCarthy and Luis Gonzalez.

These local candidates have either donated or have pledged unused campaign funds to assist in the effort to eliminate student-paid lunches.

We will get there with the support of great people like them.

My sincerest thanks!!

Closing out my campaign finance report and I will be donating $2,500 of my unused campaign funds to the newly established Monroe County School Lunch Fund. This fund is designed to eliminate the need for kids to pay for school lunches - indefinitely. Contributions to this fund will not be used to pay off past-due lunch debt, but will sit in an interest bearing account until such time as we can use the accrued interest to fund the entire district lunch program. It will take some time, but with enough community support we can get there.

Contributions to the Monroe County School Lunch Fund are generally eligible for a tax deduction as a charitable contribution.

To those who came up short yesterday, you can still help make our community better. You don’t need to be “politically relevant” to make a difference.

To those who were victorious yesterday, you will still need the help of others to be successful. You don’t suddenly possess all the answers to the universe because you simply won a “popularity contest”.

Until we learn how to lose with grace and win with humility, we will constantly be trapped in a zero-sum game that never moves our community forward.

It’s time to take our foot off of each other’s throats……

Until I’m able to find the right words, I’ll simply say, “thank you”. I’m honored.

Thank you to all Monroe County voters for allowing me to serve your children and their educators these last 4 years. Regardless of tomorrow’s outcome, serving my community has been one of the great honors of my life and I hope I have done right by all of you.

It’s going to be interesting to see where all of the candidates send their unused campaign funds….I’m watching closely.

Well- seeing what’s been happening over the past 10 days, looks like the second part of my July 29th post is aging like fine milk.

You know you’ve had enough of politics when you rip your own sign out of someone else’s yard. Is it August 19th yet?
