πŸš’πŸ”₯ THAT’S A WRAP ON FIRE PREVENTION WEEK! πŸ”₯πŸš’

What an awesome week visiting our local schools and spending time with our amazing students! πŸ‘¨β€πŸš’πŸ‘©β€πŸš’β€οΈ

This year, we focused on LITHIUM-ION BATTERY SAFETY, teaching students about the potential dangers of these batteries, how to use and charge them safely, and what to do to help prevent battery-related fires. πŸ”‹βš οΈ

Along the way, we covered other important fire and life safety topics, helping students learn valuable lessons that they can take home and share with their families. From hands-on demonstrations to classroom presentations and getting an up-close look at our equipment, it was a great opportunity to connect with our community and make safety education fun and memorable! πŸš’πŸ™Œ

A HUGE THANK YOU to our firefighters, school staff, and everyone who helped make this week such a success! It takes a team to make a difference, and we're proud to work alongside our schools to keep our community safe. ❀️

πŸ”₯πŸš’ FIRE PREVENTION WEEK β€” DAY 1 πŸš’πŸ”₯

FIRE PREVENTION WEEK 2026 IS HERE!

This year, we’re focusing on an important and growing fire-safety concern: LITHIUM-ION BATTERIES. πŸ”‹

Lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices we use every dayβ€”from cell phones and tablets to e-bikes, scooters, power tools, and other electronics. When these batteries are damaged, improperly charged, or used incorrectly, they can OVERHEAT, IGNITE, AND CAUSE RAPIDLY DEVELOPING FIRES.

HERE ARE A FEW IMPORTANT TIPS TO KEEP YOU AND YOUR FAMILY SAFE:

πŸ”‹ USE THE CHARGER DESIGNED FOR YOUR DEVICE.
πŸ”‹ ONLY PURCHASE BATTERIES AND CHARGERS FROM REPUTABLE MANUFACTURERS.
πŸ”‹ NEVER USE A BATTERY THAT IS DAMAGED, SWOLLEN, LEAKING, OR UNUSUALLY HOT.
πŸ”‹ NEVER CHARGE BATTERIES UNDER YOUR PILLOW, ON YOUR BED, OR WHERE THEY CAN BE COVERED.
πŸ”‹ UNPLUG DEVICES ONCE THEY ARE FULLY CHARGED WHEN PRACTICAL.
πŸ”‹ KEEP CHARGING DEVICES AWAY FROM EXITS AND ESCAPE ROUTES.
πŸ”‹ NEVER THROW LITHIUM-ION BATTERIES IN THE TRASH OR RECYCLING. FOLLOW YOUR LOCAL DISPOSAL GUIDELINES.⚠️ IF A BATTERY BEGINS SMOKING, SWELLING, OR PRODUCING UNUSUAL HEAT, MOVE AWAY AND CALL 911. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO HANDLE OR EXTINGUISH A BATTERY FIRE YOURSELF.

OVER THE NEXT SEVERAL DAYS, WE’LL BE SHARING MORE FIRE PREVENTION WEEK SAFETY INFORMATION TO HELP KEEP OUR COMMUNITY SAFE.

STAY INFORMED. STAY PREPARED. STAY SAFE.

πŸ”₯ YOUR SAFETY IS OUR MISSION. πŸš’

Today marked a Historic day for the Key Largo Fire Rescue District. The Harlie 3 was delivered to Key Largo Fire Station 24 by Caribee Boat Sales and Marina and we couldn't be more excited. We would like to extend a huge thank you to William Lombardo and Terry Abel for guiding us in the right direction and getting us where we are today. Most importantly thank you to June E Smith for honoring Harlie's legacy and making this day a reality for us.

This is just the beginning! Our department looks forward to training and putting our water emergency team in action in the near future. This newly acquired asset will allow us to better serve our community and protect our citizens out on the water.

πŸš’πŸš€ KEY LARGO FIRE RESCUE PROUDLY INTRODUCES β€œHARLlE 3” πŸš€πŸš’

After careful consideration and hundreds of suggestions from our community, Key Largo Fire Rescue is proud to announce that our new fire and rescue boat has officially been named Harlie 3.

This name represents much more than a new piece of emergency equipmentβ€”it represents a life, a legacy, and a mother’s determination to make a difference.

Harlie Smith tragically lost her life following a boating accident in the Florida Keys. Following Harlie’s passing, her mother, June, turned an unimaginable tragedy into a mission to help protect others on the water.

June became a driving force behind efforts to obtain grant funding from the State of Florida to help public safety agencies purchase rescue boats and improve their ability to respond to marine emergencies.

Because of those efforts, Key Largo Fire Rescue was able to purchase Harlie 3 entirely through grant funding. The full cost of the boat was covered by the grant, with no local taxpayer dollars used toward the purchase of the vessel.

As Fire Chief, I cannot think of a more meaningful name for a boat whose purpose is to save lives and bring people home safely.

I want to personally thank June and the Smith family for allowing Harlie's name and legacy to become part of the Key Largo Fire Rescue family. We are honored to carry her name on the waters of the Florida Keys.

Every time Harlie 3 leaves the dock to answer a call for help, Harlie’s memory will be with our crews and with the people we serve.

Thank you also to the hundreds of community members who participated in our naming campaign. Your response was incredible and once again demonstrated the strong relationship between Key Largo Fire Rescue and the community we are proud to serve.

Harlie 3 β€” a name with a purpose, a legacy, and a mission to save lives. ❀️🚀
