At KBCF, we believe that environmental education, scientific discovery, and opportunities for young people to engage with experts are essential to building a more informed and environmentally responsible community.🌎

Students for Coral Preservation is launching a new monthly webinar series, proudly sponsored by Youth Lead Change, connecting students, scientists, educators, and environmental advocates with researchers working to protect our marine ecosystems.

🎤 The inaugural webinar features Dr. Christina Pasparakis, a marine toxicologist and Assistant Professor at UC Davis Bodega Marine Laboratory.

A graduate of the University of Miami's Rosenstiel School, Dr. Pasparakis studies how pollution and environmental stressors affect marine life. Her research into microplastic pollution earned her a 2024 UC Davis award supporting her work on the impacts of these tiny pollutants on marine ecosystems.

Join this fascinating conversation to discover how microplastics travel from land to sea, their effects on marine life, and what science can teach us about protecting our oceans.

Mangroves are among South Florida's greatest natural treasures. They provide essential habitat for marine life, protect our shorelines from erosion, and serve as nurseries for countless species.

This Saturday, Crandon Park will become an open-air art studio during Miami Plein Aire’s inaugural Quick Draw Competition at the Biscayne Nature Center. 🌴🎨

What’s a Quick Draw? Registered Artists set up their easels throughout the park and have just two hours to complete a painting from start to finish. Visitors can wander the park, watch the creative process unfold, and see familiar Crandon landscapes take shape on canvas in real time.

When time is up, the finished works head to the Biscayne Nature Center for judging, viewing, and the opportunity to purchase a piece that was painted just hours, or even minutes, earlier.

The Monica Burguera Foundation is offering a FREE State of Florida Boating Safety Course for youth and adults, taught by U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 65 and hosted by the Key Biscayne Yacht Club.

The course is required for boat operators born after January 1, 1988, and recommended for boaters of all ages.

On September 30th, representatives from nonprofits affiliated with the Key Biscayne Community Foundation gathered at the Key Biscayne Community Center for our Give Miami Day Strategy Luncheon, led by Rumya Sundaram.

This year, 46 KBCF-affiliated nonprofits are participating in Give Miami Day!

Together, we explored ways to share their stories, connect with donors and make the most of their campaigns.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, brought questions and shared ideas. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with the people whose dedication makes so much possible in our community.

We’re excited to help that work reach more people this Give Miami Day!💜

Join Friends of Cape Florida this Wednesday evening to celebrate Bill’s legacy and the journalists following in his footsteps.

At the Bill Baggs Birthday Bash on September 30, Friends of Cape Florida will announce the Bill Baggs Fearless Journalism Award, recognizing South Florida journalists whose investigative reporting and opinion writing address Miami-Dade’s environmental future.

Earlier this week, Key Biscayne Citizen Science kicked off the 2026-27 Key Challenge, bringing local educators together to begin another year of turning our island into a living classroom. 🌿

Led by Rumya Sundaram, KBCF’s Director of Environmental Science, this year’s Key Challenge invites students to explore Movement & Migration in Nature - from birds traveling thousands of miles along ancient migratory routes, to butterflies on the move, seeds finding new places to grow and species making their way through the ecosystems of Key Biscayne.

This year's kickoff offered professional development hours for participating educators starting with a talk by avian conservation expert Steffanie Munguia, with a fascinating look at migratory birds and the remarkable journeys that bring so many species through our own backyard.

The Key Challenge gives students from Pre-K through 12th grade opportunities to explore the natural world through science, art, writing and technology - building knowledge, curiosity and a deeper connection to the environment around them.

We can’t wait to see where this year’s Challenge takes them! 💚
