Sign season is upon us. Garage sale signs, political signs and signs selling real estate are occasionally placed improperly and illegally within the right-of-way. Improperly placed signs can distract motorists, impair vision and pose a safety hazard. On Wisconsin roadways, the right-of-way is generally 33 feet from centerline.

Signs cannot be in the right-of-way, including the terrace which within the city limits, is generally recognized as the "tree lawn." Signs can legally be placed on private property, as long as permission is granted by the property owner. (Provided signs are constructed in compliance of city code.)

Signs in violation may be removed by City Police or the Department of Public Works. Signs can be claimed at the Kewaunee Municipal Building, 401 5th St, Kewaunee.

Kewaunee Ordinance Sec. 94-378(e)
No sign or sign structure shall be located in the right-of-way.

Kewaunee Ordinance Sec. 94-378(k)
No advertising device of any type shall be in any way attached to any utility, sign or other municipal poles or structures located in the public right-of-way.

Signs cannot be placed on City property. Signs cannot be placed on privately owned utility signs, poles or structures, such as those owned by Wisconsin Public Service.

The Kewaunee Police Department appreciates your attention to this matter and can be reached at (920) 388-5010 if you have questions about sign placement. Ensuring the safety of our community is of utmost importance.
