Lesser celandine looks cheerful with bright yellow flowers, but this invasive spring plant spreads aggressively and can completely take over woodland floors and wetlands. Originally introduced as an ornamental plant, it now threatens native spring wildflowers and sensitive habitats.
Leaves: Dark green, shiny, kidney- to heart-shaped leaves on short stalks that emerge early in spring
Flowers: Bright butter-yellow, glossy flowers with usually 8 petals (sometimes 12) blooming in early spring
Roots: Thick finger-like tubers underground and small whitish bulblets forming along the stems
Growth Pattern: Forms dense carpets before trees leaf out, then dies back by early summer
Invades forests, wetlands, riparian areas, lawns, and disturbed sites
โข Crowds out native spring ephemeral wildflowers
โข Spreads rapidly through tubers, bulbils, and seeds
โข Can dominate entire natural areas if left unmanaged ๐ณ
โข Poisonous to livestock and humans
Learn to identify it early in spring before it spreads
โข Avoid moving soil or plant fragments from infested areas
โข Remove small patches before they expand
โข Monitor sites for regrowth โ underground tubers make this plant persistent
โข Report sightings in your area
Those bright yellow flowers carpeting the woods may not be as harmless as they look
