MTL nomination packets now available

Members of the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin who wish to be nominated as a candidate for the Menominee Tribal Legislature (MTL) elections can pick up nomination papers at the Tribal Elections Commission (TEC) office located in the Wilmer J. Peters/Menominee Tribal Courthouse/Law Enforcement Complex in Keshena during normal business hours starting September 14.

To be eligible to run for MTL one must be an enrolled member of the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin; be 25 years of age or older; have no convictions of a major crime; and personally circulate a nomination petition collecting at least 100 signatures of eligible enrolled tribal members.

Only the member seeking the position for MTL is allowed to pick up the nomination packet.

Please be prepared to show a picture ID, provide current contact information and be able to stay for at least 15 minutes when picking up a nomination packet.

Packets must be complete and returned to the TEC office no later than 4 p.m. on Monday, September 28 with no exceptions.

This year the terms of legislators Joey Awonohopay, Randal Chevalier and Joan Delabreau are expiring.

If enough candidates file to require a primary election, it will be held Wednesday, November 11, in Neopit at the College of Menominee Nation Building (old MTE building) and Thursday, November 12 at the Menominee Casino Resort. Voting will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. both days. If a primary election is not required, all candidates move on to the general elections in January 2027.

Absentee voting arrangements are available through the TEC.

The top three vote-getters will be sworn to terms of three years each at the February re-organizational meeting where the new Chair, Vice Chair and Secretary will be elected.

Internet and phone capabilities at the Community Resource Center have been fully restored and are now available for public use.

Additionally, Hillcrest Road (the small connector located just before the Post Office, below Standing Cedars Convenience Store in Keshena) will be temporarily closed to vehicular traffic. Please plan alternate routes during this period and use caution in the area.
