Know Your Water: Bacteria
There are many factors to evaluate when determining water quality; one of those is bacteria levels. Bacteria are single-celled organisms that are a natural part of ecosystems all over the planet. However, some bacteria can cause health problems and sickness in humans who come in contact with them. E. coli is a type of f***l coliform bacteria that lives in the gut of warm-blooded animals. We test the level of E. coli in the river because it can be an indicator of pollution from animal waste. Areas of the river that are frequently visited by groups of wildlife are usually not healthy for swimming. Observe the area before you jump in and use your best judgement.

As the weather gets warmer, bacteria levels in surface water can often increase. To monitor this, UGRA collects water samples at popular swimming holes for the Summer Swimability Study. The water samples are analyzed at the UGRA Environmental Lab for E. coli bacteria and the results are compared to state guidelines for recreation. Weekly bacteria results are posted on the UGRA website from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
