Kinship care, where children are placed with relatives, offers tremendous benefits for family reunification. Here’s why:

1. Familiarity & Stability: Children are surrounded by familiar faces, which provides emotional stability and reduces the trauma of separation.

2. Stronger Family Bonds: Reuniting children with relatives strengthens family ties and helps maintain a child’s sense of identity and cultural connection.

3. Easier Transition: Kinship care allows for smoother transitions back to the family, making it easier for children to return home safely when possible.

4. Supportive Environment: Relatives are often more invested in the child’s well-being, providing a nurturing, supportive environment that can help prevent future foster care placements.

By prioritizing kinship care, we are creating a more stable, loving, and supportive environment for children to grow and thrive.

KCDHS Employment and Financial Services Bureau is proud to recognize Shandi Perea as the June 2026 Employee of the Month.

Shandi is a Human Services Supervisor leading a CalFresh/Medi-Cal ongoing unit in the Lamont office. She stands out for her empathy, fairness, and professionalism, consistently showing up for her team and creating a supportive, motivating environment. It’s clear why her unit loves working with her.

Shandi joined the department as a Bakersfield College intern and has become a highly respected program expert. Since starting as a Human Services Technician I in 2014 and promoting to HSS in 2019, she has become a go‑to resource across classifications, frequently assisting staff and Policy with her unmatched knowledge.

She goes above and beyond. Shandi played a key role in preparing Lamont for the District Services Single Focus transition, led staff training, and developed the system now used to distribute work across units. She also heads the Lamont Morale Committee, helping strengthen office culture while balancing a busy home life and pursuing personal growth.

Her impact is significant. The system she developed was highlighted during CDSS’s recent error‑free Management Evaluation review, reflecting her expertise and commitment to excellence. Beyond measurable results, her influence is seen in the confidence and success of those she mentors. Shandi’s leadership continues to elevate the entire organization.

Congratulations Shandi!
