Sharron Guinn shared with the Hostesses the devotional: “If our greatest need had been information, God would have sent us an educator. If our greatest need had been technology, God would have sent us a scientist. If our greatest need had been money, God would have sent us an economist. If our greatest need had been pleasure, God would have sent us an entertainer. But our greatest need was forgiveness, so God sent us a Savior.” She then read John 3:16 and closed with a prayer.

Connie Phillips read the minutes, and Sharron Guinn presented the Treasurer’s Report.

Acquisition – Vida Simpson, Chair: Connie Phillips reported that Bobby Slaughter wanted to gift the Medallion home with a butter mold and a bottle cap topper, items of his grandmother, Zimmie Jewel Slaughter, known to all as Jewel. Brochure – Vida Simpson, Chair: Vida said that she would have more copies to be ready for the Ranchers’ Tales to be held at the Medallion Home on September 27.

Building and Grounds – Vida Simpson, Chair, and Connie Phillips

Connie Phillips reported that she had visited with City Manager, Mike Arismendez, about the wording of the sign that the Hostesses discussed at the March meeting. The City personnel have placed the brown historical signs on East Avenue identifying directions to the Historic Medallion Home.

Connie prepared for the Medallion Home and Vida supplied copies for the Hostesses a document timeline of events page concerning the Pioneer Park, Medallion Home, Moorhead Derrick, and buggy carriage from 1907-2024. More information concerning a particular event was included on the subsequent pages. A laminated copy of the timeline page will be at the Medallion Home under the guest book for the Hostesses to refer to when needed. More descriptor cards have been placed with items at the Medallion Home with just a few left to be done.

Vida Simpson will visit more with Sheila Michel about the feasibility and possibility of a video tour of the Medallion Home to help with wheelchair inaccessibility. They will report at the September meeting.

Regarding the fence and fence lights on the other three sides of Pioneer Park, Mr. Arismendez and the City Council will ask for bids for the project.

President Janet Marler handed out new gate keys to the Hostesses.

Calendar – Evelyn Lockwood, Chair: Evelyn asked for the Calendar Committee to meet briefly after the meeting to discuss the 2026 calendars. Those ladies include Pam Greene, Sheila Michel (absent), Judy Thomas (absent), Sharron Guinn, Connie Phillips, Becky Creager, and Cindy Deaton.

Pam Greene reported that she also had bricks from the old Kermit High School, those being 2 from the gym and 2 from the band hall.

Moorhead Derrick – Janet Marler, Chair: President Marler noted that the derrick is still a work in progress. She reported again that Richard Jackson would donate his time and expertise to help identify parts. Mention was made again of a shadow box idea which could potentially house some of the derrick parts with pictures and descriptors. The Hostesses were encouraged to contact Texas Tech School of Architecture. Perhaps a student(s) in the architecture field would be interested in designing a scale model of the Moorhead Derrick as a potential project for the required coursework. Connie Phillips will contact Brandon Hartley, an alum of Tech’s School of Architecture to ask for his input and expertise.

Under unfinished business, President Marler reminded the Hostesses of the Campfire Tales on September 27, 2025, at 9 a.m.-10:00 a.m. Hostesses can volunteer at the September 7th Hostess meeting.

The Hostesses of the Medallion Home met Sunday, March 02, 2025, at the Winkler County library. Members present included Carolyn Cox, Velma Ethridge, Debbie Hamilton, Betty Hayes, Donna Hayes, Bonnie Leck, Evelyn Lockwood, Janet Marler, Sheila Michel, Connie Phillips, Vida Simpson, Dahti Stansel, and Judy Thomas, which constituted a quorum. All members received their updated packet containing membership names/information, officers and committee chairs and members, refreshments assignments, and Hostess duty assignments.

President Janet Marler called the meeting to order, and Secretary Connie Phillips took the minutes.

Vice-President Debbie Hamilton introduced Linda Vargas who wowed the Hostesses with her program on quilts. An expert and originally self-taught quilter, Linda shared her history of quilting, as well as several of her quilts. She brought her very first quilt, a quilt completely hand sewn, several machine and hand sewn quilts, and several completely machine-stitched. Linda currently shares her talent with “anyone who wants to learn from what I can teach” on Mondays at First Baptist Church in Kermit. It was noted that many of Linda’s lap quilts drape the pews in the church for warmth and comfort.

The ladies then shared delicious refreshments together provided by Sheila Michel, Dahti Stansel, and Keri Jones.

Debbie Hamilton shared the devotional with the Hostesses for absent hostess, Sharron Guinn. Debbie read from Psalms 3:1: “They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do.” Debbie noted that we need to have our roots firmly planted in faith to keep us strong for the trials of life. She then led the Hostesses in prayer.

The minutes were read and approved.
The Report of the Treasurer was presented by Vida Simpson for Treasurer Sharron Guinn.
Bills were presented and approved.

990 Report for Moorhead Derrick Fund – Vida Simpson will take the financial records to the accountant in Monahans before the April 15, 2025, deadline.

REPORT OF STANDING COMMITTEES:

a. Acquisition – Vida Simpson, Chair: Vida reported that the 1984 History Book on Winkler County was given to the Winkler County Library. Because the library already had two copies of the book, Librarian and also Medallion Home Hostess Vida petitioned the Winkler County Judge and Commissioners’ Court to donate the book to the Medallion Home.

b. Building and Grounds – Vida Simpson, Chair, and Connie Phillips

i) Connie Phillips reported talking with Mike Arismendez, Kermit City Manager. The City of Kermit has placed two signs on East Avenue, facing north and south, which direct drivers to the Medallion Home. The brown signs read “Historic Medallion Home”. Also, the City has repaired the front steps to the Home. The City will have the dilapidated Nursing Home structure demolished by the end of May. Mr. Arismendez plans to discuss with the City Council at the March meeting ideas to erect new fencing on the other three sides of Pioneer Park to match the front, but without the lights on top of the fence. He would like to put lighting of sorts throughout Pioneer Park to help with security, though. He requested wording for the new fence sign from the Hostesses to replace the one taken down on the old fence. The Hostesses agreed on the wording:
Medallion Home Museum
Texas Historical Landmark
Open Most Sundays 2 – 4 p.m. 432-586-3468
After Hours: 432-586-2577

i) Vida Simpson reported on wheelchair accessibility from the State Historical Commission. The Hostesses agreed with the Commission that the integrity of the entire Medallion Home would be compromised by widening all doors. Sheila Michel suggested taking a video of a walk-through of the Medallion Home and making that accessible, either at the Home or on the City’s website, if possible, to accommodate special needs.

c. Memorials – Velma Ethridge, Chair: Janet Marler reported for Keri Jones about the status of the four bricks from the old Kermit High School given to the Medallion Home. Keri has secured the donation of a granite marker from Roy Bean of Monahans. A group met with Mr. Bean on February 27 at Pioneer Park. He can attach permanent signage to the stone which would read, “These bricks were from the Kermit High School erected on School Street in 1951. The public school included a band hall, gymnasium, auditorium, and classrooms. In 1963, additional classrooms were added on the North side of the school. The final addition, located in the central South area of the school in 1982, included a new front entrance and the relocation of the office and library areas. The school was used to educate students until September 2011, when the new school was built, and it was eventually demolished in February 2024.” Mr. Bean can also etch a picture of the former Kermit High school and include that in the marker attachment. Betty Edwards will find a picture. It is hoped that the four bricks can be laid in a cement footing with the granite marker. Connie Phillips will ask the city manager about the cement base. It was discussed to inscribe the top of the bricks by laser the specific building from where the bricks came. Hostesses.

d. Moorhead Derrick – Janet Marler, Chair: Janet distributed pictures from James White of the Petroleum Museum on how the museum displays objects. Vida will talk with the Historical Commission about ideas on possible covers for the outside derrick parts.

e. Volunteers and Docents – Janet Marler, Chair: Carolyn Cox reported that she is working on hours to pledge a sorority. She asked to be considered to sit at the Medallion Home on Sundays for anyone who could not work that day. She also volunteered for any special project help that Hostesses might need.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS:

1. Vida Simpson reported that the Winkler County Historical Commission and the Volunteer Firemen would again like to work with the Medallion Home Hostesses to host The September Campfire Tales gathering at the Medallion Home on September 27, 2025. A suggestion was to tour the Home from 9:00-10:00 a.m. first. Then the Campfire Tales would begin at 10:00 and last until 12:00 noon. That way the Hostesses could participate in the Campfire Tales. A motion was made and seconded by Bonnie Leck and Betty Hayes to approve this suggestion and enlist the help of as many Hostesses as possible to give the tours at the earlier hour and then attend the Campfire Tales afterwards.

NEW BUSINESS:

1. The next meeting will be on Sunday, June 01, 2025, at the Winkler County Library.

2. Thanks were extended again to Sheila Michel, Dahti Stansel, and Keri Jones for the refreshments.
