Sugarloaf Ridge State Park Features:

The best views in the North Bay. From Bald Mountain’s 2,700 foot summit, you can see San Francisco, Napa Valley, Sonoma Valley, Mt. A lovely seasonal waterfall on Canyon trail.

25 miles of hiking trails. Everything from an easy 1-mile nature trail to a challenging 8.2-mile loop over Bald Mountain. Great mountain biking and horseback riding trails. Incredible

What happens when we stop looking at nature for a moment–and simply listen?

On a summer evening at Sugarloaf Ridge State Park, the landscape comes alive with sounds we might otherwise miss. Birds calling in the distance. Insects humming. Leaves rustling. And, if we’re lucky, the calls of owls after the sun goes down.

This Sunday, we’re slowing down and tuning in again. Join host of the Jack Hines podcast on NorCal Public Media and KRCB104.9 Jack Hines for a special Soundscape Listening Walk in celebration of California Biodiversity Day. With high-tech audio equipment that brings the evening soundscape closer, we’ll spend time quietly listening to the many voices that make up Sugarloaf’s summer nights.

Challenge yourself to a thru-hike between Hood Mountain Regional Park and Open Space Preserve and Sugarloaf Ridge State Park (or vice versa) and let the Sugar Shuttle do the driving.

The free shuttle returns Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 5-6, running between Hood Mountain’s Pythian Road entrance and Sugarloaf Ridge State Park’s Visitor Center. We recommend riding the shuttle first, then hiking back to your car. The one-way hike is about 7.4 miles with 2,300 feet of elevation gain and takes about 3.5 to 4.5 hours.

Join us on this 2 mile, family friendly hike focused on snakes and other reptiles to celebrate California Biodiversity Day. We will begin with a short presentation inside the Robert Ferguson Observatory, followed by a walk along the Lower Bald Mountain and Creekside Nature trails, the preferred habitat by these species.

This event is planned around a primarily Latino audience and will be conducted in Spanish. Families from underrepresented groups are welcome to join. Free transportation available within a 20 mile radius of the park for families in need. For questions, please email [email protected].

[Traducido al español debajo] What's Shakin' at Sugarloaf this weekend? Explore the park after dark (bring a flashlight!) and watch the full moon rise over the Mayacamas. We're offering two full moon hikes this week: Wednesday is a 4.2-mile moderate-to-strenuous, 800-foot elevation gain hike up the Vista Trail starting at 6 p.m., or take the 6.5-mile strenuous hike to the summit of Bald Mountain on Thursday, starting at 5:30 p.m. Both hikes require registration to attend.

On Saturday morning, learn the human history of Sugarloaf. On Sunday afternoon, take a Slow Geological Journey along one of our accessible trails.

Big thanks to Sonoma Valley Fire District and CAL FIRE Sonoma-Lake-Napa Unit for helping out with our annual fire drill on Thursday, August 6!

With over 191,000 visitors coming through the park every year, safety is a huge priority for Sonoma Ecology Center and Team Sugarloaf. We're grateful for the support of local fire agencies who aren't just responsive during emergencies—they're deeply embedded in our community year-round and always willing to share their knowledge with us.

Thursday's drill brought together three CAL FIRE personnel and three Sonoma Valley Fire District personnel onsite. Their expertise helped us make sure our plan is as thorough and tight as possible, and they offered a great many useful suggestions along the way. We're glad to say they were pleased with both the plan and its ex*****on.

Watch this space for a full rundown of this year's fire drill, and the various measures Sonoma Ecology Center staff and Sugarloaf Ridge State Park volunteers take year-round to keep the park safe for everyone.

Sometimes the best part of your hike is when you pause to take a deep breath, close your eyes, and just listen to the sounds of nature.

Regulatory sensory experience aside, there's so much that the field of Soundscape Ecology can teach us about the health of an ecosystem. Soundscape Ecology studies the sounds of a landscape—birdsong, insect hum, wind through leaves, water over stone—as a window into habitat health. The mix and rhythm of these natural sounds can reveal how a habitat is faring, from species diversity to the effects of changing climate and human activity.

On August 16, Soundscape Ecologist and Sonoma Ecology Center's GIS Specialist, Jack Hines will lead listening exercises and a guided soundwalk, inviting participants to slow down and tune into the layered voices of the park's forests, grasslands, and creeks.
