Many credible political pundits are referring to last week’s elections outcome as a “split decision” on a national scale. But here in the “Great Lake Effect State,” we’re armpit deep in something that isn’t snow. The one question that we must answer isn’t, “What happened?” as much as it is, “What are we going to do about it?” if we’re going to accomplish anything constructive going forward. Since Christmas 2016, I’ve posted a grand total of three opinion pieces on this site, which is a very far cry from my usual pace; blame the weird hours of my current work schedule. The interesting …

There is no such thing as a "hack proof" voting machine . . . and this video should scare you.

My late father, who was old enough to fly P-51D Mustangs for the USAAF during World War 2, once told me that he could remember exactly where he was and what he was doing when he heard about the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Likewise, my elder brother (the only one of my siblings who is legitimately a baby boomer) can recall exactly where he was and what he was doing when he heard about the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. In the exact same vein, a certain September day a decade and a half ago is irremovably burned into my memory. I originally posted this first-hand account five years ago on the original version of this site, and today seemed an appropriate time to publish a revised version of the original here. The unofficial results are in. I only pulled 17.49% of the total votes cast (out of an anemic 6.65% turnout), missing the general campaign by 513 votes (22.83% of the total votes cast). Clearly, this wasn't my night. I truly wish Steve Redmond and Thomas Webb all the best in this fall's general campaign.

Steven Redmond, a March appointee to the Kentwood City Commission, will have to continue fighting to keep the seat after losing to challenger Thomas Webb by 42 votes in Tuesday's primary.

I commend Dan Kasunic for taking prompt action to address this problem (literally as soon as he was informed of it). 63 absentee ballots may not seem like much, but in the past three years (going back to November 2012), five local elections in the City Of Kentwood have been decided by less than 105 votes. Given that, as of last Wednesday, the returned absentee ballots (about half of those sent out) account for roughly 1/4 of today's expected turnout, not addressing this problem risked triggering a very expensive and unnecessary recount process.

Some ballots cast for the Tuesday, Aug. 4, City Commission primary election have been affected by a mailing error.

It's always interesting to see whom the donors are in local races. Not every donor in this primary is listed, but it's interesting to see who's backing whom in a contested local primary race.

Three candidates are vying for one four-year Kentwood City Commission term.

Well, that was an interesting triad of phone calls. Evidently, being a principled candidate means that I'm not going to please every voter.

3,275 postcards are going to be delivered tomorrow to all of the City Of Kentwood high-turnout voters who haven't already (as of July 29th) turned in an absentee ballot. Much Gratitude to the fourteen donors and four volunteers who made this GOTV mailer happen.

This article in the Southeast Advance briefly discusses each of the three primary candidates for the At-Large (citywide) Kentwood City Commission seat up for election this year. (http://www.mlive.com/kentwood/index.ssf/2015/07/three_candidates_vie_for_kentw.html) I'm not sure where they get the notion that either Mr. Webb or I are political newcomers, but I'm perfectly comfortable with being underestimated.

KENTWOOD – Three candidates are vying for Kentwood's open commissioner-at-large seat in the Aug. 4 primary election. Incumbent Steven Redmond is facing off against newcomers Kevin Heine and Thomas Webb for the seat.

A campaign for elected office requires two things to win: money, and everything else. I'm currently attempting to raise enough money to fund the production and mailing of a final-week, citywide "get out the vote" mailer to all high-turnout and newly-registered voters in Kentwood, as well as enough door hangars to "lit drop" each of those doors during a final weekend precinct blitz. This page is intended to be an online fundraising tool for my 2015 campaign for a Kentwood City Commission seat.
