Black Mesa State Park With flat-topped mesas, deep canyons and natural rock formations, Black Mesa State Park & Nature Pre At 4,793 feet, the mesa is the highest point in the state.

Located at the tip of the Panhandle, Black Mesa marks a meeting point between the Rocky Mountains and the shortgrass prairie. And it highlights some of the best features of both terrains.

3/16/26 Update: The park remains in a burn ban.

2/19/26 Update: Dry and windy conditions continue in the the panhandle. The park burn ban will remain in place until the dry conditions improve.

2/17/26 - Due to maximum gusts expected around 70mph and extremely dry conditions, we are putting the park under a burn ban until the critical fire danger passes.

Waking up to a winter wonderland! ❄️ We woke up to about 2 inches of fresh snow at the park this morning. It was a chilly one with temperatures starting in the single digits, but the sun is out and it’s beautiful!

The snow won't last long—we're heading for a high of 40°F today. The rest of the week looks mild with highs in the 40s and 50s. 🏔️☀️

The quail are out in full force today. They don't seem to mind the cold.
