At 0500 Hours C Shift was dispatched to Scioto Village Apartments for a 1st alarm structure fire. Prior to arrival, the crew was advised that there was at least one occupant inside of the apartments. KPD attempted to make entry into the apartment with extinguishers from their cruisers, but were pushed back by heat and smoke. Engine 71 arrived on scene and found heavy smoke coming from apartment 38 where the unaccounted for occupant resided. Two firefighters made initial entry into the home and removed one victim. Charles Cain, a 67 year old male, was transferred to BKP at 0509 where resuscitation efforts and transport to Hardin Memorial Hospital were made. Although a tremendous effort was given by C shift and BKP, Mr. Cain succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. The Kenton Fire Department would like to thank KPD, BKP, SEHNWU Fire, and Richland Fire for their assistance on this incident, and would also like to give our sincerest condolences to the Cain Family.

An eventful start to the year!

01/23/2026

❄️With an arctic blast and accumulating snow in the forecast, the City of Kenton is getting ready — and we want residents to be prepared too. City crews are already in snow prep mode, readying equipment and routes as conditions develop.

Please be prepared for the City to declare a Snow Emergency if weather or snowfall creates hazardous travel conditions. If a snow emergency is declared, on-street parking will temporarily alternate by day — vehicles may park on the even-numbered side of the street on even-numbered days and the odd-numbered side on odd-numbered days. This system allows snow crews to clear streets more efficiently and keep travel safer for everyone. Any snow emergency declaration, as well as when it is lifted, will be shared with WKTN, Your Region Your Radio, Kenton Times, right here on the City of Kenton page, and on our website at www.cityofkenton.com

As temperatures drop, residents are also encouraged to take simple steps to help prevent frozen pipes. Closing air vents in crawlspaces or basements, sealing foundation cracks, keeping thermostats set consistently, letting faucets drip slightly during extreme cold, and opening cabinet doors under sinks can all help reduce the risk. Vacant or seldom-used properties should be checked regularly to ensure heating systems are operating properly.

Bundle up, plan ahead, and let’s all work together to weather Snowmageddon safely! ☃️🚜❄️
